I'm doing some research for a friend who breeds budgies :D and I was wondering if you could tell me about problems that can occur and how to fix them.

The help who be much appreciated!!! :P

Can you be more specific?

What type of situation are you speaking about?

If you are speaking about breeding, it is not cut and dry and some situations can not be fixed.

Be more specific, and I know that our experts here that breed will be able to help you out more.

My friend had one female attack another pairs' babies and two were killed, she now has them separated coz she has more eggs but is this just a one time thing or could it happen again?

Also two of the babies mysteriously died and she doesn't know why. Are there diseases/problems they can get at that age? (They were only about a week or two old)

And also what sized nest box, or doesn't it matter?

is she breeding them in an aviary? it is not advisable to colony breed in this way as it is common for fatalities due to fighting and nest raiding. :budgiedance:

many people here have a lot of success by selectively breeding the pairs in breeding cabinets.

here are a few links about avian diseases that affect eggs and chicks, and some other useful links:

this will get your friend off on the right track but she really needs to be doing the research herself to get the best understanding she possibly can, as breeding budgies is a huge responsibility. Is it possible for her to access and join this site? that way she can ask for a little more specific guidance as an when needed.

Pixie covered it, does your friend have internet have her sign up for an account here too :budgiedance:.

My friend has put the other pair in a smaller cage within the aviary to prevent the same thing happening as she now has more babies. The one that survived the first clutch is happy and healthy and will be going to a new home soon. :ygbudgie:

Would it be better if she put the pair with babies in the smaller cage or is it okay as is?

Selective Breeding is the safest type of breeding...you can still get into trouble and loss chicks through attacks from the parents but not from other birds.

Here is my current set up.

This is a dual breeding cages with two pairs. They can't interfier with each other.
