Posted February 1, 200619 yr Yes that's the the type I want :fear Pick another as to the other question it's bit hard to tell. Single factor violets look like a cobalt. But the check patches are very dark which I seem to remember is a possible sign of a bird being violet. Help at all ? lol I got this from Terri's mutation game thread, and didn't want to confuse everyone there. I'll do that here. LOL, Nerwen what do you think of this? Sorry for the blur, my camera has been acting up. I need a new one. I've wondered about whether Sky carries the violet factor even though she is visually, no doubt-about-it, a skyblue. But look at her cheek patches. They are as dark as Arctic and Blueberry's, which I believe are violet skyblues. Sky carries a hint of purple coloring on her shoulders, just above the wing where the head bars come down to. What's up with that? Do you think she carries it? No kidding, compare hers to these:
February 1, 200619 yr (Laughing out loud)..shes H O T ! ! ! Really...so if my birds have purple face markings....they carry violet genes?..possibly..(Laughing out loud) thx Buddy
February 1, 200619 yr I love all your birds Rainbow. Yes I think she carried the gene if what I understand about the patches is correct. Violets can come with none, one or two dark factor genes which also alter the colour in the body.
February 1, 200619 yr Here is more information I picked up on Violets . Sky blue budgies with one violet factor will have a violet tinge, especially in the body feathers near the feet, and sometimes look darker than a normal sky blue http://www.geocities.com/budgie-place/p_colors.html Mask (face) - white Body - deep violet color with black and white wavey striped wings and back. Tail Feathers - dark blueish black. Throat Spots - three black spots on each side Cheek Patches - purple http://www.budgies.org/info/colors/violet.html This may not help but make it worse but I figured it can help with identification.
February 2, 200619 yr Author Thanks for the link, lovey. From that it seems Arctic would be a double factor, but that would mean Rainbow and Skittles both would have to have the gene, right? Arctic I'm pretty sure is skyblue as a base color (same color as Sky-the first picture I posted) because you can see individual skyblue-looking feathers but they are around his vent. The other feathers have a purple tinge, and his tail is purple. The other weird thing about Arctic is that most of the shell feathers on his wings are fringed in purple instead of white...and he is not opaline. Nerwen, Daz, any ideas about why that is? So would that make Sky a single factor violet, with no visible violet characteristics other than the dark cheek flashes? How confusing is that? (Posts Merged) Continued........ Hello? Any ideas? I've done some searches, but am coming up with nothing. Does anyone have a book on violets?
February 9, 200619 yr So would that make Sky a single factor violet, with no visible violet characteristics other than the dark cheek flashes? How confusing is that? Well reading my book a few time, and it doesn't have much on violets and doesn't give any hint on how to pick a violet from a cobalt, just states it's hard to do :budgiedance: yes we know that. but it seems I was wrong in my thinking and a sf violet can only get as light as a cobalt but a sky. Since there are ties with the olive gene which is a double factor dark factor (wow that sounds odd) so does that mean the darkness of the cheek flashes mean nothing? February 9, 200619 yr Author ...I think my head just exploded.... I don't know, nerwen. It is confusing. What I know for certain is that Sky is a skyblue dominant pied, has very dark cheek flashes, and very dark black markings on her wings. She's my pudgy budgie with half a necklace and a jealous streak a mile long. I don't think I'll ever breed her because of her weight, so I suppose it's a moot point. But it's going to bother me until I figure it out. :budgiedance: Because I'm just that way!
