Hey guys...

I have 2 budgies, 2 males, and 2 females. My males are 4, and otherone is about 1. The females are 2, and the new one is like 14 weeks old (store baught). Now, heres my question?!?!? The males seem to have bonded, and are leaving out the females, even though the older one is ready to nest (diggin in nest box, brown cere e.t.c). Im going to build an aviary in the spring, for my room, so should i put the two birds that i want to breed (yr old yellow faced blue type 1, and hen is a white recessive pied) in the aviary by themselves for the first couple months with a nest box to bond and maybe breed?!?!?!....I want babies soooo badly, and i want to fill up my future aviary with babies instead of having to buy some....

What do you guys suggest i do? Or should i build aviary, AND a wooden breeding cage, and put the pair i want to breed in the wooden cage, and the oldest male, and baby female in avairy so they can have more room to fly and play (not going to breed them..(Laughing out loud)..too young..(Laughing out loud)). What would u suggest guys?!?!?!?

thx

Kirby :)

syr, i have 4 budgies..(Laughing out loud)..2 male n 2 females...forget the first 4 words i wrote down...(Laughing out loud), i meant 4*, not 2..(Laughing out loud)

Kirby,

I have been trying to get around what you want to say or have. :)

I take it that you have 2 males. Are they 4 years old?

You have two females. Are they 2 years old?

It is good that you are interested in breeding and I assume that you have the knowledge to go along with it.

You will need to make good recordes of the ofspring to make sure you don't line breed.

Please let me know the correct ages of your birds so that we can help.

(Laughing out loud)..thx Daz

I have 4 all together. A yellow faced blue type 1, whos is about 1..maybe 11 months old named Kirby. Then my other male Chico is about 4, i breed him when i was 8. Then my girls include Ariel whos about 2 now, white recessive pied, and Belle my new baby from pet store ia now about 14 weeks old and is a sky blue normal. I want to breed Kirby with Ariel to get white and yellow pieds, and blues, yellow faced blues, and dominant pieds possibly...but neither of them are dominant pieds, so i doubt that one..(Laughing out loud)

I just put Kirby and Ariel into the 30x12x18 flight cage, and Chico is now in with Belle in a 20x10'18 store baught cage. Kirby and Ariel are already flirting, and head bobing, e.t.c. I have out in the nest box, and filled it with twigs, sticks, various tupes of shavings, and kleenex to make her have a variety, and to make her feel int eh nesting mood. She has already started to pull the sticks out, as well as the shavings, and i just looked at them, and his iris rings are flaring, and shes sitting low beside him on the perch....good sign or no? They DO get into a lot of fights, and she is older than him so i have my doubts theyll breed, but i think if im patient they will. THey are both moulting now, so im not expecting babies, nor do i want them now, since i want to wait till they are in best condition as possible. I do know A L O T about breeding, as ive breed since i was 8, till i was about 11, i now im 16 on Macrh 2!!!...so i want to get back into it...

So any help would be appreciated...thx guys! Oh and ive filed down a vitamen block into their food cups, and on there food, so they extra calcium (i had it hung in the cage for ever, but no one touched it except Chico, so this way, they all get extra calcium and minerals when they eat..(Laughing out loud), sneaky me! They also have fresh vegies daily, and cuttlebones!

thx

kirby

1. MAKE SURE THE NEST BOXES ARE CLEAN ( REMOVE THE TWIGS AND KLEENEX and SHAVINGS )

:)

2. If YOU DONT WANT THEM NOW TAKE AWAY THE BREEDING BOXES TILL THE BIRDS ARE FIT

3. The BUDGIES will need MORE BREEDING BOXES if YOU are BREEDING them IN THE AVAIRY.. at least 3 boxes or more and spread the BREEDING BOXES AWAY FROM ONE ANOTHER.

4. If the two hens look like fighting over a nest box THEN THE NEST BOXES ARE TOO CLOSE YOU SHOULD STOP ANY FIGHTS....FINALLY LET NATURE HELP

okay..thx docca...

E V E R Y O N E says to put in shavings e.t.c, so i did it this way so it was VERY realistic and she felt productive....Regarding them breeding, do you think they will still want to pair up with eachother even if the nest box isnt in???..i just thought it would make them want to bond even more....ya, im going to build a couple wooden boxes out of wood. Some will be the tall ones, some will be the normal 'flat' ones. And no, actually, the two hens bonded, and the two males bonded. The one female is only like 14 weeks old, so hence why im not trying to breed her..(Laughing out loud). I will position 3 or 4 next boxes at various levels, and placed on ALL walls....to give vairety once again....

okay, i gtg now..bye

Not all budgies like the shavings. Some do some don't. It depends on the bird. As docca said take out the twiggs and tissues they are not needed. Most of the time a bare box is all that is needed. It is only realistic to you. Like really don't care for it.

Budgies will pair even if there is no breeding box. Pairing is done in the flight. My breeding boxes are in cages located a distance from the flight.

Did you quarentine Bell when you got her? If not keep an eye that she hasn't brough in a desease with her.

Sounds like you are wanting to colony breed in the future, if so then vairety is the worse thing to do. THe hens will fight over what they think is the best box, which might be the highest one or the biggest. IF they are given boxes that are all the same size and hunga t the same hight and the same way it will lessen this behaviour but there are still big risk to breeding like this. But many do so and don't have any issues with the birds.

I prefer to selective breed in their own breeding cages. You don't have the trouble of colony breeding.

  • Author

k thx guys...

Yes, i DEFINATELY quarnteened Belle..for like 35 days i think..then let her in with other guys for a while.. Then moved her back alone to tame her better. I just put Chico in with her to let Kirby and Ariel to bond better. Belle is doing so0o0o GREAT! Even though Chico's in with her, she still steps up on my finger..and they had their first flying time outside of the cage together today..(Laughing out loud), of course they stayed on the curtain rod all the time..(Laughing out loud).

As for breeding, no i will NOT be colony breeding. I will move the selected pair into the cage that Kirby and Ariel are in now, so that they can spend time alone, while others are off in the aviary playing e.t.c. I know it sounded like i wanted to colony breed, but i was refering to when i have just Kirby and Ariel in the future aviary i will give plenty of boxes for her to choose...and yes, i KNOW she likes the wood and kleenex in her box cuz when she emtpies it out, she flies to the bottom of the cage, and play with them, and even started to shed up the twigs, and put them back into the box..weird eh..(Laughing out loud)

ps-Kirbys flirting with Ariel as we speak!!!..YAYAYAYAY!!!!

thx

Buddy

UPDATE: 22/02/06

Chico and Ariel have paired up! I am sooooooooooooo excited man! They are:

-Chico is a: yellow faced type II skyblue recessive pied...(about 3 or 4)

-Ariel is a: cinnamon violet white recessive pied...(one and a half, twoish)

Ariel has done the "U" shape with her arched back NUMEROUS times now, btu Chico is still a bit nervous. I have noticed that he gets closer and closer to her when she does it, and he 'tickles'her back with his beak. (While her back is arched, he sing to her, and head bobs her back, looks like he tickling her..(Laughing out loud)). He feeds her A LOT mo than before (ne never use to..hahha) and ive seem them feeding eachother about 5 times, PLUS RIGHT NOW...AS WE SPEAK!!!...YAY!..(Laughing out loud). They do NOT preen eachother yet, but he sure does sing a lot to her. Are my pair getting ready to start a family now?, or are they tricking me?... Now, she is in the nest box, and he is sticking his head in the hole singing to her....is that a good sign?....Im going to get the cage eterris is getting off of windycityparrot.com...the cage part is 32" tall, 21" wide, and 32" long, and with the stand its 59" overall. They will have A LOT of room to have babies in it hopefully!!!....and i cant wait to order it!

So, are these all good signs?...i just dont know why they dont preen eachother...yet she still wants him to mount her a lot..?..(Laughing out loud)

thx

Kirby

  • 3 weeks later...

They don't have to preen, yes they do in a flock area to keep a connection as mates but when set up to breed that get reduced (or stoped) and the singing and bobbing that you spoke of started to happen more often. Do you know if this male as breed before? What about the hen? You might have an experienced hen with an inexperienced male, which is a good thing, but it will take him a while to read and understand the signs she is giving.

(Laughing out loud) thanks Nerwen!

The thing is, i breed Chico 4 years ago, and i baught Ariel when she was 8 weeks at a pety shop like a year and a half ago. So they have never breed before, and this is the 1st time they ever payed attention to one another!...hahahha. All i hope is i get healthy babies in spring, and Chico and Ariel remain freinds!!..(Laughing out loud).

They have fed eachother A LOT now, like 3-5 times a day that I notice, so who knows how many times while im at school. She has been in "U" shape another time last night that i saw, and he still just sang, and bonbbed his head on her back...(Laughing out loud). But he still looks to be gettinbg bolder and bolder everyday!....Shes in the nest box as we speak, with Chico on entrance hole singing to her...(Laughing out loud)

Kirby

well, you'll get pieds, you'll get yellowfaces, I'm not sure how the YF gene effects the violet gene so I'll leave that one for someone else, and you wont get any cinnamons unless your male is split for it.

one thing you posted confused me, you said that you bred your male 4 years ago but he has never bred, do you mean you owned the pair that produced him, or did actually breed him before?

and just for clerification, is your hen blue violet or green violet

  • Author

okay thanks Dingo!

So, pieds eh?!?!?..which i LOVE, but will i get any blues, or opalines? Chicos siblings in the clutch after him were opalines, with white faces, then there was one yellow faced normal blue. In his clutch, the babies were all yellow pieds, and then there was one white B E A U T I F U L pied boy, who i almost kept....but liked Chicos tempermant better. And no, i have NEVER bred Chico. (Laughing out loud), your right, it sounds like i did, but i just owned his parents who bred him, and i just decided to keep him....

So, no cinnamons then? Here are Chicos parents, him and his siblings, then the blue opaline/normal clutch i had (sry for terrible pics)

ENJOY!!!

Kirby

Had to hunt around to find pictures of the pair again.

you should get:

Yellowface blue recessive pied

Yellowface Violet Recessive pied.

If Chico is split for opaline then you will get some. All the males of this clutch will be split for cinnamon unless he carries the gene and then you will get some showing.

  • Author

okay thx again Nerwen...but do you have pics of a yellow faced blure recessive pied and a yellow face violet recessive pied?...And here are good pictures of Ariel...and her possible violet (he eys looks injured in the one picture, but it isnt, shes perfectly healthy!!!)...Enjoy... And her new lover is the yellow male in the white cage which is now moved in with her in the bigger cage, and my yellow faced blue male is now in the smaller white cage with the skyblue baby hen....enjoy!

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR FEMALES TO HAVE AN EGG WITHOUT BREEDING????....UNLESS THEY MATED WHILE I WAS AT SCHOOL! 5th egg is here!..yay!

okay thanks Nerwen!

The first time i candled the egg was a day old, and ive candled probably 4 times now (the oldest egg is about 9 days old now)...All i saw was a yellow yolk in all of the eggs...it was a blob that would flost around...but i didnt not see any veins! So i will check again tonight, and i will tell you guys later!...wihs me luck, im nervous that they arent fertile now!

Kirby

If they arn't all is not lost, you can remove them and get her to cycle again and maybe ome mating will happen.

  • Author

okay, sounds good nerwen!

I did candle them again...and just yellow yols were in them....no veins! Im using an ordinary flashlight, so could that be why?!?!?....

She didnt not lay another one today (she was suppose to lay her 6th today) but the days not over yet, its still only 5:44pm over here in Canada! She is still being very loving towards them (has been incubating them all since each one was born and the oldest egg is now 11 days old)...and ive heard the hen only incubates them if they are fertile?....So wish my tons of luck!...and what size flashlight do i need?..mines only a cheap, smaller one....

Kirby

It's the strenght of the light more than the size, but if your seeing the yolk then the light is fine. By day 11 it shouldn't be clear. Hens will sit on egg fertile or not, even fake eggs or marbles will be brooded by a hen. If she doesn't lay another egg tomorrow then I say it's safe to remove them so she will start her cycle again.
