Ringing Time.

I have rung the clutch of older chicks with split rings. All my birds are rung so I don't line breed. :(

Today I rung the older of the new chicks. He/s is 6 days and as I am very busy tomorrow I thought I'd give it a go. It is the first time I have used a closed ring and on a chick so young. I remember the first time I tried to change my new born son's nappy. I was so scared that I would stick the pin in him, ;) I had to give up. I felt the same today. :D But didn't have anyone to do it for me. But we got there. ;)

Use a match stick daz with out the head rather than a neddle (pin)

:D at lest that what I think I remember reading. Good luck with it, I've never liked the idea of ring but I guess oen day I will have to start so I can keep track of who is who.

EDIT - lucky me just had the book still that I read it from (yay) but (aww) it was for a cockatiel chick. But I would wonder if a wooden toothpick would work the same way. No pointy end that way.

I used a tooth pick and it worked.....but guess what. This morning NO RING :)

I'll have to try tonight. Well I'm getting a lot of practise. :D

The whole ring thing mystifys me and i have no idea where you would stick the toothpick :) but thought id add GREAT JOb Daz (once you get them to actually stay on)

Cheers

Una

:D

You hold three together and push the ring on then use the toothpick is to help get the last toe out from under the ring.

Sounds like it's a bit early yet for ringing, if it can slip off the foot. have you asked anyone the age of the chick they ring at? Hath do you ring?

:) Hmm i'm thinking that someone either needs to take a video, or get someone to take some snap shots of this whole process.

I haven't put rings on my birds but a few that i bought had them already on. I had absolutely no idea how they went on and i was picturing that they sorta got crimped on (loosely) :D I hadn't realized that while they are small they just slip up and over the toes..

Well there are two sort of rings split rings that I believe go one like you said and the inclosed rings that get put on as babies.

Pics would be GREAT

Daz , Una , Nerwn and others Banding the birds is essential for your records....

Some babies are bigger at five days others seven days around that time you can band the trouble with split rings they are not sealed...

in this old picture you see the front two toes or three the last two or one is carefully pulled through use a smooth fine stick....( look when the eyes just slightly open only a slit.

PS I forgot to say sometimes the mothers preen the young and do remove the rings if you band too young

Regards Doc :hap:

Great photo Docca. That is what you need to do.

I successfully ringed (for the second time) last night. Boy it is interesting to see how much the chick grew in one day. I don't think I could have put the ring on him today.

Hath would have to ring his birds or he couldn't show them. There are rules on how the ring is to be shown on the bird. That is which foot.

When the chick is hatched, three toes face forward and one back. As the chick grows one of the front outside toes turns backwards to assist in griping the perch / branch. The best time to ring is between 6 to 10 days old. As docca said, Some chicks are large at 5 days and some are at 7 days. You just have to try at 6 and see what happens. Some times if the chick's leg is too big you can get a second chance a day latter. As the leg grows, it can lengthen and slim down a bit. If you wait too long and can't ring the chick, it can't be used for showing.

I don't know about England but in Australia the show birds must have a solid ring on not a spit ring.....and it has to be the right way up :hap:

:hap: Of cuase I keep forgetting about the showing side of things. Knowing me I would put the ring upside down on the leg :)

:) Don't worry my wife had to remind me twice while I was doing it. It is not easy. imagine threading a needle while the needle keeps moving. :)

:fear OMGOSH.. Thank you for the picture Docca.. I would be terrified id break the poor little ones leggie and id be fearful id accidently rip off a toe or two  ..

Thank goodness i don't have show birds, and i don't intend of having so many that i forget who belongs with who :P

I ringed my first batch of zebra hens, and swore I would never do it again. It was sooooo scary, I'm glad I don't show and don't have to do it again

:D una I don't know what your mean

We I did it. This morning a got the ring on the last chick. At one stage it was just about on and he pulled his leg so quickly the ring came off. But I did finally get it on.

I'm glad I'm not a big breeder with lots of chicks. :D

I'll take some pics to night for you. Got some video of george to put up also.
