What Do You Do With The Babies

:D Hi Breeders " Fostering the Babies " Is my spelling down the tube

Can anyone share their thoughts and ideas regarding Fostering

1.either eggs

:nest:

2.and or new borns to Fledglings

3. Many top show breeders have supporting foster parent birds.

Heres an Example of Fostering ( Well basically the most expensive budgies I saw a pair of Champion Show birds so the young are very delicate to the owner each egg is like a new gem ) They were Light greens split to Lutinos ... at the same time in the breeding area the breeder will pair good feeders of total different colour and type allowing a spread of eggs and young when they hatch a round three at the Max ) You will find that say you have a miss hap Budgies will tend one anothers young banding is important and record keeping.

Hi Docca,

I use to Breed and show Lutinos about ten years ago,

But now i just colony breed ,Manly rainbows and yellowface,I do however have a few breeding cages where i specialise in clear wings,

I subscribe to budgerigar magazine, which is a great mag dedicated to breeding and showing budgies.

Like many breeders i will move chicks about in nests to even them up a bit,

I often find that one chick on its own wont do very well,But just by adding a couple more it tends to stimulate the parents into action and they feed much better.

Regarding eggs, I tend to leave well alone unless they are from a very big clutch and the hatching dates are a long period apart then i will move them to another nest.Iknow some breeders will take the already older chicks and move them but i find by this time the hen is feeding seed to the older birds and has run out of crop milk,The closer the age of the chicks or eggs the better they are together.

Gillian is about right. Some reasons to foster.....

  • Keeps clutch sizes equal
  • Less strain on Parents
  • Gives chicks a better chance all the way around.

Some points to remember......

  • When fostering egg make sure that theclutches are about the same age.
  • Don't put a new egg into a clutch that is about to start hatching.
  • Keep the chicks about the same age.

......Keep records.....

Nice to here from some one concerning Fostering and also I am interested personally on tips for breeding some nice rainbows possibly Golden faced .... can you expand ....

clearwinged opaline yellow faced...?

Regards Doc :ausb:

Hi all,

My first rainbows were bred by accident from a pair of birds that i bought from a petshop,

The hen was a clearwing violet cobalt,

And the cock was a pied violet,They produced all yellowfaced young colbalts mauves and skys,

The cocks were all rainbows and the hens were all yellowfaced normals.

Having no expierience of rainbows at that stage i was rather bemused as to where the yellow face had come from.

After purchasing a book by Ken gray titled RAINBOW BUDGERIGARS AND CONSTITUENT VARITIES.

I began to work out the genetic makeup of a rainbow budgerigar,

This explained how i got yellowfaced budgies out of two whitefaced parents.

The formula as you know is whitewing yellowface opaline or golden face combined in one bird,

Once you have all those factors in youre birds its just a matter of pairing them accordingly to produce the right combination.Easier said than done though like most things.

The challenge is to produce good coloured young and keeping the size i find is always a problem.

We here in England dont have good clearwings like you do in Australia so you have an advantage over us.

I always find that the darker colours produce the best colored rainbows.

I love violets and have a lot in my flights,

I only keep blue series birds and i am trying like many others to breed that wonderful whitewing violet

I have a nest at present with 4 chicks two are whitewing violets keeping my fingers crossed that there wings will be pure white and not dirty.

Will keep you informed.
