Lands sake, as many as you want :(Laughing out loud): As long as they have enough perches there won't be any fights. You are sooooooo lucky!

Hi Budgiebird! I am planning on building an aviary once we move into our 5 acre property, and have absolutely fallen in love with your set up!!! Can I please ask what type of netting do you have over the outdoor area, and also what plants are inside it??? Oh also, how many budgies do you have in there??? It is such a great set-up and I am getting so many fantastic ideas!!! Is it a big job maintaining it??? Thanks heaps!

We didnt build these aviaries ....they were at the house we bought. Netting seems to be the standard galv mesh bird netting and pole construction. The dimensions are approx 25 feet by 10 feet wide and maybe 8 feet high. Mostly natural gumtree branches for perches and thick ropes. They LOVE the rope perches. The plants in them I cannot tell you to plant in yours as I believe some of them may not actually be good for budgies although we were told they were safe. I have since read that elephant ears are not safe so they are coming out. But, the budgies seem to know whats good for them and whats not. They have left the doubtful plants alone and are eating the palms.....golden cane palms and others. Wandering jew I was told isnt safe but have since seen it as a safe plant on the list of safe plants. Unless the plants are well established before the budgies go in they will destroy all attempts to get plants going. Lin made a great suggestion to move pot plants in and out as their condition comes and goes....out when they need rejuvenation etc. There is reticulation in there and taps and hoses for refilling water and washing paths. There is drainage, and guttering.....dry and wet areas and all kinds of natural and interesting things to perch on. I can do you a series of photos and send to your email address if you PM me. There is around 55 budgies in the main aviary ( Ken has scarlets and bourkes, finches and a canary in HIS aviary ) ..... mine is the budgie aviary. I have no doubt you could have twice that many comfortably but I have no wish to crowd them or create territorial disputes so the maximum for me is the quantity thats in there plus a few babies I may keep to add to the flock. There is quails running around the bottom of the budgie aviary to scrounge up the excess seed. There is auto feeders and watering suppliers, not counting what I hang from the sides or near perches. Any more questions just PM. Cheers Karen

Totally forgot to mention. The entry to the aviaries is through a room that is about 5 feet wide by 8 feet deep.....you lock that door behind you. This room is the storage room where the feed is kept, catching nets, feeders, a bank of breeder cages, hospital box, spare cages and nesting boxes. It also has power and lights. Then you go forward through the next door to an area (meshed) that is around 5 feet by 5 feet....lock the previous door behind you. This area leads off to the left to Kens aviary through another door and off to the right to my budgie aviary through yet another door. In essence all birds exits are through triple doors so no escapes. Any catching or herding of birds or quails can be into this meshed room. There are hatches over the doors to be lifted to allow full height flythroughs if needed and hatches in the mesh wall for throwing food in without going all the way in. I hardly ever use these as I love to walk through. All aviaries are lit at night with 2-3 low voltage lights which the birds seem to like and not fear.

OMG I am so impressed!!! Oh the ideas running through my head now!!! Thanks so much for all the info! You too Daz :D

*edit* Daz was it stainless steel or galvinised steel that you used for your aviary???

Edited by Riebie

Galvinised but wash it down with vinagur and water. 1 part vinagur to 4 parts water. Give it a good scrubbing and then wash it off.

I then give it a coat of non toxic paint to seal it.
