Posted January 24, 200619 yr Thank you in advance for your help. I have 3 budgies. Two of them were supposed to be girls and later on I got a male. Last month I realized the 2 "females" mated. As soon as I relaized it I went to a pet shop and got everything they told me they were going to need. They sold me a plastic nest that goes on the side of the cage, a nest pad, they told me to put oatmeal an the cage's floor. I did everything they told me to do. A few days ago, female went inside the nest and ripped the nest pad off, and took it out the nest, I thought she was going to arrange it to her liking, but she didn't left anything inside the cage. Yesterday morning I opened the nest and I saw 1 egg, but the afternoon she had laid two, but she is not staying with them, she is outside with the other birds. LAst night I went back to the pet store to see if they could help and they told me that probably thats becaude the eggs are sterile. I don't understand why this is happening. This is the first time they breed. I'm so sorry I didn't prepare myself better for the breeding process. Please I need all the help you can give me. Claudia :ausb: :oliveb:
January 24, 200619 yr Hey Claudia, Don't worry about your mama bird throwing everything out of the nest that you put in. Budgies like to have their nest with nothing in them. I put in a bunch of pine shavings and my hen spent almost a week trying to take every last one of them out. Just this morning, one of her eggs hatched, so as far as the pet store telling you the eggs aren't fertile, they do not know what they are talking about. Also, another one of my hens did not start to sit on her eggs until the third one was laid, so try not to be too panicked just yet. Wendy Edited January 24, 200619 yr by Nerwen
January 24, 200619 yr There can be a few reasons But I wouldn't give on the eggs yet. Sometime budgie don't start to sit on the eggs and brood them until there are a few there, she might start doing so after the third egg which will appear two days after the last egg. Other reasons could be simply down to first time breeders and not understanding what to do. They might be underage, you shouldn't breed with budgies that are under a year old. Because they are still growing themselves. Or as the pet shop said they might be infertile. If she doest sit on these egg then no harm down you can remove the box (maybe a week after the egg have been ignored) and read up some more before trying again. Also when breeding it best just to have the pair in a cage alone, the third budgie can bother them while mating which can lead to clear eggs, bother the hen in the nest which can lead to broken or dead babies, or attach the parents or babies to get the nest box for them self. So if you haven't already move the third budgie to another cage. wendy beat me Edited January 24, 200619 yr by Nerwen
January 25, 200619 yr I can't add anything, as you have been given great advice, just wanted to say Hi and welcome
January 25, 200619 yr Thank you very much guys! I got my soul back! After leaving the library yesterday (my computer broke) I went home and took the third bird out of the cage. I noticed that mama is going more often to the nest and this morning I could see the lump on her belly. She is so cute! When is papa going into action? I mean he hasn't been close to the nest yet. Thank you again!! Claudia
January 25, 200619 yr if its like chikens she will wait till the nest has more eggs and then start to brood a couple of days wont harm the eggs
January 26, 200619 yr The male doesn't really go in to the nest at all at this stage! Mummy bird is likely to beat him up if he tries! When the babies are a few weeks old he will feed them, but, at the moment his job is to look after Mummy
January 26, 200619 yr When mum is spending more time in there he would get closer and don't panic if he does enter the box, that's okay too. OR else he will simply sit by the hole and sing or eat again to feed her some more :budgiedance:
January 26, 200619 yr Hi everyone! I was expcting my budgie to lay another egg yesterday, I didn't noticed because this time she didn't do it inside the nest. This morning I saw another egg in the cage's floor. I thought I should put it with the other two but when I picked it up I noticed that it had a hole in it. Is this normal? Thanks Claudia
January 26, 200619 yr sounds like it cracked when it fell. Yes first time mum somtime do realise when they should be in the box to lay the next one. My Freckle laied about 5 out of the box before working out what to do and even after that laid one outside again. Before settling down doing a great job.
January 31, 200619 yr Hi again... It looks like she made a hole in the egg, but anyway that was last thursday and she didn't lay another one yet. Last couples of days I haven't seen her go in the nest at all. What should I do now? Yesterday was 1 one week since she laid the second of the 2 eggs. Thanks
January 31, 200619 yr My Mama bird laid and broke 6 eggs before she started to sit on the eggs that yielded three fabulous chicks. I don't really know if you should do anything - I'm guessing no. Besides, what can you do? You can't sit on them, (Laughing out loud), and you can't force her to.
February 1, 200619 yr The egg will not hatch any chick now, it's been too long and they have gone cold. I would removed them. If the hen isn't showing any signs of interest to the box any more removed it for a week before adding back if this are still in condition to breed. OR you can remove the box and read up HEAPS before trying again in the future. Edited February 1, 200619 yr by Nerwen
