Posted January 24, 200619 yr I just bought home 2 new birds, and whilst I have them quarentined, I hadn't had a close look at them, (They were freebies) I just had a chance to look at them, and the hen seems to have scaly face, I've never actually seen it before in the flesh so to speak, and am wondering what to do with her, whatever is wrong with her, is effecting her legs and feet as well. she came from the same breeder as my original pair. What is the best thing that I can do for her?
January 24, 200619 yr http://www.birds-online.de/gesundheit/gesp...abmilben_en.htm Found this site...thought it might help.
January 24, 200619 yr Yep, definately scaly face, went back to breeder, who offered to swap the bird for another one, and when I said I'd keep it gave me a bottle of the stuff to treat it. Cool, only problem, how to apply it without getting bitten, she's fast as. she keeps biting the cotton wool bud too. I'm wary of holding her, never held them much, don't want to hurt them.
January 24, 200619 yr Wrap her in a towel, and just unwrap the bits you need to treat as you need to. Much easier if there are two of you.
January 24, 200619 yr Will do, Hubby gonna help, should i treat the bird that I got with her as well? He isn't showing any symptoms. I don't really want to introduce this into my avery.
January 24, 200619 yr Might be best to leave them quarentined until all signs have left the hen. To be sure that it doesn't spread and that both don't have any more signs. what stuff are you using?
January 24, 200619 yr "aristopet" scaly face and leg treatment for caged birds.. I am not intending to release them into the avery for quite a while, even maybe 6 mths, I am intending to wait, if this appears to be reacurring in the hen, I will not put her in the avery at all. i have a large cage that they will be quite happy in, and they can be house birds for a while, they are youngish so might even become pets. She's fast with that beek of hers, got me several times. pest.
January 24, 200619 yr If that treatment shows no signs of helping within a week or two, it would be a good idea to have her seen by an avian vet to get something stronger. From what I've heard of others' experiences, Ivermectin is most effective. Pet store bought medications often don't work or don't work as well.
January 24, 200619 yr Ivermectin is also a lot easier. Other treatments, i believe, require several treatments. When i had a budgie with serious scaly face i went to the vet, got ivermectin and you only have to apply it once at first and then again as a precaution in a months time. You will have to treat the bird she's with because the mite can 'hide' and not show itself for quite a long time. I had to treat all 20 of my aviary birds.
January 24, 200619 yr no avian vet around here, small country town and all that, the vet told me to go to the pet shop, if this doesn't clear it up, I'll take her to Melbourne to a vet, but in the interests of domesic peace I'll try this stuff first. (shes looking better today than what she did yesterday, quite a mild case I think, or caught just in time.
January 25, 200619 yr :redalbino: Monty had it on his beak and feet and his feet were the worst. He had two injections, two weeks apart and he was cleared of it. Actually the vet said he was probably cured by the first injection but she routinely gives two just to make sure.
January 25, 200619 yr Now her Vent? (Bum) is dirty, this is recent, when I grabbed her this morning and put the stuff on, I noticed, approx one dropping stuck to her feathers, its still there now 3-4 hrs later, should I clean it off?, she seems happy otherwise, moving around and what not.
