Live Food?

Hi guy's,

Just a quick question before I shoot off to work. I read an article by a breeder with 30 years experience, and he said that 5% of a budgies diet should be meat. Do budgies eat insects in the wild? If so, my local pet store sells live foods like meal worms, earth worms, crickets etc. Any of these be much cop?

Look forward to your replies when I get back tonight.

Cheers for now :parrot:

When any wild bird is eating plants, they will swallow the odd ant or other insect. Insects provide protein. When I give my birds branches, I leave any ants on there for them to eat. I wouldn't go to the effort of buying them, just make sure they get the odd one or two

It's okay to offer pieces of chicken or turkey that you've cooked for yourself but if you're feeding a pelleted diet, protein is covered and shouldn't be supplemented. Too much protein can lead to renal failure though "too much" means it would have to be a very large part of your budgie's diet. Around 90%. And no one thing should make up that much of a budgie's diet anyway. ;)
