Posted January 21, 200619 yr Just wondering about beak maintenance. Sylvester seems to be keeping his beak ground down by rubbing it on the perch. But Tweety's beak is getting quite long and sharp looking. She has access to everything that Sylvester does. Is this something to worry about?
January 21, 200619 yr Can you get a picture? Some budgies do have a little more trouble keeping their beaks down but most don't seem to have a problem with it. Do they have a cuttlebone or mineral block in the cage? Sometimes this helps. If it seems to be overgrown it may need a trim by a vet. The beak is very sensitive to them though so never try trimming it yourself. In most cases, the vet won't even perform a trim unless the beak is becoming severely overgrown. Sometimes overgrown beaks are signs of underlying illness so this would be another reason to have it checked out by the vet if it's getting out of control. Are the nails overgrown too?
January 21, 200619 yr Author I'm not sure if you can tell from this picture. I drew an arrow to show where the end of the beak is. It is hard to see because the tip is quite white. Looking forward to your response. Thank you.
January 21, 200619 yr Yes it is a bit too long. Have you got a calcium perch? It is harder than just cuttlebone and will do the trick.
