Please Help With Sick Bird

Hi, I hope someone can help me help my bird. Firstly, a trip to the Avian vet has been booked for tomorrow (earliest I could get in). Clyde's problem seems to have arisen when I put in new food. I bought the food from the store I always shop at, and it's a mix of regular seed, and the premium seed. He doesn't seem to have eaten it, and has been pooing green. So I got him some cucumber, apple, spinach, and fresh seed (same seed I just bought), and he has been eating that. He has been fluffy for the past 3-4 days, which I attributed to a drastic drop in temperature outside, though my house has been as warm as, if not warmer than before. He isn't chirping, (only once that I noticed in the last few days), and seems to either be sleeping or just keeping his eyes closed most of the time. He also goes to the floor of the cage periodically (though thats always been normal for him), and keeps opening and closing his beak after eating, as if he was talking.

Any help is appreciated, including what I should expect from the vet.

Thanks.

Poor thing. :yellowhead: Keep him in a warm, quiet room. You may want to put a heating pad under his cage set on low. Put a towel on top of the heating pad and then the cage on top of the towel. You were right that they fluff because they're cold but obviously his coldness has to do with being ill in this situation. Are the droppings really bright, like lime green? It's normal for a budgie to have green droppings when eating a lot of seed but if they are bright green this could be a sign of liver troubles and/or psitticosis. Of course, I'm no vet and it's impossible to diagnose a budgie based on these things alone, I'm just throwing out some possibilities. Hopefully it's much simpler than that.

It's great you're getting him to the vet, please keep us updated on what happens!

keep us updated...and welcome to our boards I wish it was under better condition.

Hi, and thanks for the reply ... HEY, Clyde just chirped!!! And he's eating.

Yes his poo is, I guess bright green, and it's usually black and white. What is psitticosis? I've been surfing around, and I thought that was a disease a lone bird couldn't get. Clyde, however, isn't the only animal in the house, I also have 2 cats.

Good for Clyde! Hope he keeps up the improvement and that the vet will bring good news.

Here is some information on pscittacosis: http://www.avianbiotech.com/diseases/chlamydia.htm

I'm not sure how long you've had Clyde. If he does have this (and hopefully he doesn't!) it could have come from other birds at the store or breeder where you got him. If you've had him for a long time this probably isn't what he's got.

Really, it could be any number of things. Budgie symptoms are so very general. I hope it's something that will clear up easily and fast. :yellowhead:

Hi, and thanks for your reply. Clyde is at the very least, 6 yrs, and I think probably closer to 8yrs old. His mate Bonnie (who was younger), which didn't come with Clyde, passed away about 6 months ago. Other than her, Clyde has never had contact with another bird.

Welcome to the forums.....hope your boy gets better :P

:D Best wishes for a speedy recovery Clyde! :P

Hi and Welcome to the forums. Hope everything goes okay with Clyde.

Let us know what the vet says.

best to see the avian vet about the poops. liver and renal problems are very common in older budgies.

good luck and hope for a speedy recovery x

let us know how everything goes today

Hi Mate and Clyde... :ausb:

Keep your bird warm, dry and out of the breeze or drafts ( fresh water, a small drop of olive oil will flush the system ) Stop feeding any greens till your bird is stronger ( sometimes what you are describing comes from a chill or greens like lettuce ( which I personally dislike for budgies )

Shell grit and charcoal are also great....

Regards Docca :ausb:

:P How is it going with Clyde?
