Posted January 17, 200619 yr Hello Again! My hen has laid 4 eggs and I noticed this morning that not only has she pulled out feathers from her belly, but she has also pulled out feathers from her tail and flight feathers. Is that normal? Also, should I be putting in a bedding material before the babies arrive? They should be hatching by Sunday or Monday. Here is a picture to show you. Thank you for all your replies. This really is an informative site! Wendy
January 17, 200619 yr Most budgies will throw out any nesting material you put in. You could put some nesting material in the cage, and if she wants it she will take it up to the nest
January 17, 200619 yr have you seen a budgie add to the nest lin? In the wild they use hollow trees and such and remove the insides until they are happy. Looks like you have some wood shavings in there already which she had pushed away making herself happy the way it is. You could hadd some move if you want but she will most likly push it all away again.

I was just wondering if I needed to put any other type in for the babies. I know I have seen a few pictures of birds in their nests on this site that have had a white "fluffy" material for the babies. I just don't want the babies hurt on that hard wood surface. :yellowhead: Thanks!
January 18, 200619 yr The babies shouldn't hurt themselves on the wood....I put a bit of stuff in that helps to soak up the poo so the babies don't get it stuck on their feet (dry poo stuck on their feet can hurt them...can even cause their feet to become disfigured) The mother always throws most of it out but she leaves enough of it for it to do it's job..
