Breeding Panic, please answer me !

okay I have two bugies and of cause one is female the other male. They are in a simple bird cage (plently of room for both to fly about) with no nesting box or anything to make a nest with, but I caught the male jumping onto the girls back to breed!! and him trying to feed her (nothing was past, but the actions were clear)

I need to know if they will breed in the cage they are in or not!!! I was lead to believe it was fine to have them together like that. Should I panic about my girl suddenly laying eggs one day?

The female is about 3-5 year old but i'm not fully sure on the male only that when I got him about 5 mounts ago he was still to young to breed and was told if I did want to breed them to wait at least 8 months, but I believe he his about two years old.

Is this normal, do they breed and laid eggs without a proper nesting site? they don't get out of the cage ever, for I have a cat which trys to attack them and I use to have a dog that wanted to kill them too (I did let the girl out before I got the new one).

dont panic they will practice breeding but it would be very unusual for her to lay eggs without a box and if she did just remove the eggs

That happened to me. I didn't have a nest box, but my birds began breeding (constantly) anyway. (I ended up giving her a box since she was going to lay - the first egg was in it the next morning. Now instead of 2 birds I have 11. :bluebudgie: ) I think it is unusual for a single pair of budgies to breed, especially without a nest box, but I can attest that it can happen. I'm pretty sure if she lays any eggs on the floor of the cage they will be ignored. If you don't want babies and she does lay, I would do as hath says.

Hi

Yes the same thing happens to us.

2 budgies in a cage. They began to bread. I bought a box and next day. Hey presto an egg. We now have 4 chicks and they are at it again!

jonny, don't let them raise more than 2 clutches in a year. You may have to seperate them after this clutch (if you allow them to raise the second clutch).

Will you be keeping all of them too? :bluebudgie: :D

okay thanks, I was really freaking out, but I think she is wanting to make a nest becuase she has always been mad at ripping the bark of the braches I give them and this morning Pie (my boy) has chewed tail feathers, which he has never had in the whole time they have been togther. I'm keeping an eye on them and hope to keep you updated.

I think that females chew a lot more than males do, but I have noticed especially when Skittles is in breeding condition she chews most anything she can get her beak on to shreds.

if your hen lays eggs and you dont want any chicks swap the eggs for plastic ones.Dont just remove the eggs as she will keep on laying till she has a full nest and this could be dangerous for her.It is unusual for a Hen to lay eggs without a breeding box but it can happen.

okay well she had always been mad to chew stuff so i;m not to worried about that  I got a cuttle fish for them but I haven't seem much marks on it. But if she does laid then at lest it's there for her.

Ginny I was told also to take them and boil them and put them back. Is that okay? I have seen the plastic ones in stores so just in case I will get a patcket.

I haven't seem then at it again and yesterday I keep them inside, becuase I read something about keeping in dark will make her worry and so not laid thinking it was the wrong time. But I have seen him mate feeding her again.
