Clipped Wings Growing Back

Featured Replies

The store owner where I got my budgie clipped his wings, I would like to let them grow out now. Any ideas on how long it takes for the feathers to grow back? Also about budgies and windows, many people are for wing clipping because people say budgies can kill themselves flying into windows, i know they could hurt themselves but if someone can shed some light on that topic i would be apreciative.

thanks in advance.

it can take aroun 6 - 12 months, depending on when he has his first moult. All the feathers may not return in their full glory afyer the first major moult, sometimes it can be the second moult that finally see's the bird in full flighted glory.

They can end up harming themselves by flying into windows, yes. But you can reduce the risk of this by always having the curtains or blinds drawn when your bird is out of the cage and by covering mirrors as well. There are safe ways to have a flighted bird you just have to be VERY careful. :)

Also, now while your budgie is clipped is a good time to give him the tour of the hosue showing him all the windows and tapping on them. Eventually budgies learn where the windows are and then they don't fly into them. :P

The best thing you can do is what you did and ask questions and get the facts about the pros and cons on wing clipping.

As I have said before in my posts before, I believe it should be based on each individual bird and what you are trying to accomplish. I remember I finger tamed my tiel with unclipped wings with no problem, but the one that we rescued to even get near her and get her back in the cage we did finally break down and clip her wings so she would be more managable until she gained our trust. Then we let them grow back.

I assume the same thing can be applied for budgies. Pretty's wings were clipped when we purchased him. He was not in an enclosed cage when we bought him, they had him and the other budgies in a big table like enclosure with plyglass around it with no top. So they probably did it so they would not fly out.

Would I have clipped them personally myself? It would have depended on him. I am going to let them grow back, he already has 2 on each side growing back in and he flies a little higher and higher it seems all the time :).

This of course is my my view :fear.

Thanks for all the help! :D

I tried it yesterday and in my room (where he will be out) i can cover all the windows and mirrors. So as long as i watch him he shouldn't get into TOO much trouble. But of course....who knows.

Thanks again! :D

It would be better to just cover windows and mirrors when the bird is flighted rather than hope he's learned what a window or mirror is. The first accident might turn out to be more than just a learning experience; the bird could be seriously injured or killed.

It really helps to have window blinds in the room that your bird will be flying in. They cover the glass but still let a bit of light in.
