Hi guys,

My name is chris and i am from newcastle australia and i have been looking around the net to find out about budgie breeding?

I have 2 budgies and they are about 2 yrs old and they are shagging like crazy.

I have made a house for them that should work but i am finding it hard to find out what to put in there or leave on the floor of the cage? to nest in..

Any ideas are most welcome as they want to be parents very quickly as they are acting like i used to when i got my first shag in my teens....

Hi,

You don't need to put anything in as I found when I first started that I wanted to make their nest cosy for them and they threw out all the materials and she laid her eggs on the floor of her nesting box and that worked best for us.

You put sawdust in your box, as this prevents splade legs on your chicks.

dont put sawdust put wood shavings that you buy from the pet shop for rabbits sawdust will kill the chicks as they breath it up as i made this mistake when i first started breeding

I tried using shavings, no luck. Then I tried the bedding I use for my hamster, as it's much softer (Carefresh). No luck there either. Rainbow kept kicking it all out of the hole, although the bedding did stay in longer than the shavings. I finally gave up, and they were perfectly happy with nothing but themselves, the eggs, and a wooden floor. (He was very determined that every bit got taken out too.) They managed to keep the nest box rather clean, as Rainbow would also kick all the droppings from the babies out of the hole also. I didn't have a problem with splayed legs - I thought nesting material was for sanitary reasons only? But whenever they breed again I know not to bother with anything but a box, because anything else will all just end up on the floor of the cage... :bluebudgie:

We tried soft bedding (as recommended by pet shop). Female just through it all out. Our birds seem fine. They just have a nest box with a hollow at one end for the eggs.

Around here all the 'keet boxes that are the right size are just flat inside. 'Tiel boxes have the hollow, but not the budgie ones. Not that it mattered, but I looked everywhere for one and couldn't find it.

 

Has anyone else used a nest box without the hollow for the eggs?
