January 14, 200619 yr Great updates Birdmom.. I hope that things continue to go well for you.. they are adorable.
January 20, 200619 yr They are fabulous! Here are some update pictures. Each baby is a different color and each one is so pretty. The white one is so little, kinda like Mama. I am enjoying them so much. Pictures are from Wednesday evening. The white one is the youngest, blue is next and green/yellow is the oldest. The youngest is now 17 days old. When do I start giving them food to play with? They are very strong, are all over the nest box, and it's getting so difficult to take pictures out of the box now because they are never still! They climb like crazy, grasp a finger with their feet to stand on it, and hate to be away from each other. They chirp nonstop if they are not with their clutchmates and love to cuddle and climb all over each other. The nest box gets unbelievably filthy every day, and if we don't clean it out morning and night, they get poop stuck all over! (head, back, feet, you name it!) - so I just swap out the nest material, takes 2 seconds, each enough. Much easier then cleaning poop off of the babies. Hope you like my update. So.... what do I have to do next? When do they start coming out of the box? Julie and the Budgie Family Edited January 20, 200619 yr by Nerwen
January 20, 200619 yr oh how beautiful and that is so neat that you got 3 different colors. I remember reading from others, I believe it is 4 weeks . But they may not be able to actually crack the seed until 6wks of age, each chick is different though. January 20, 200619 yr Oh, what an array of colours you have! They won't come out until they are fully feathered, and then they will slowly come out. Have you noticed that when you open the box and they all huddle at the back, the youngest, and therefore the weakest is always at the back? Always makes me snigger that does. Big scaredy cats You'll be surprised at how quickly they fly, it really is marvellous. Oh, you have sooooo much joy ahead of you with these bundles of mischief
January 20, 200619 yr Aww they all look so Cute Your doing great work as a grandma. Don't worry about offering them food Dad (and mum) will lead then out of the box around 4 weeks could take up to 5 before out and another 2 weeks before they learn to feed themselves fully. If you have soft or fresh food for mum and dad they will happily try that when ready and learn to eat healthy stuff from the start.
January 22, 200619 yr thanks for all of your wonderful feedback. They really are doing great. When I open the box, they really don't seem afraid, and actually are anxious to come out and play. They stand on the feet, legs all stretched out, and look like they are trying to climb right out of that box!. I want to make sure they are not afraid of hands and people. So, we still have a long way to go before they come out, from what I understand from you ladies. I'll give Mama and Papa extra fresh food and, yes, they are eating so much! I'm filling their bowls 2-3 timesa a day amd the bowls are emtpty! Is it normal that Mama doesn't spend much time in the nest anymore? More pics soon Julie and the Budgie family
January 22, 200619 yr Great to hear they are still goig well, yes it's normal for mum not to be with them all the time now in the box, Dd would be doing a lot of the feeding now and they all have down or normal feathering and so can keep warm themselves. It quite safe now to handle themfor around 10 minutes at a time so they get use to hands and such and a very tame once flying free.
January 22, 200619 yr You can bash the seeds with a rolling pin to crack them, and then put them on the floor for them to have a peck at. Or soak some seed (cover with water, change water every 2-4 hours) and give them a bit after it's been soaking for 24 hours
January 22, 200619 yr You can bash the seeds with a rolling pin to crack them, and then put them on the floor for them to have a peck at. Or soak some seed (cover with water, change water every 2-4 hours) and give them a bit after it's been soaking for 24 hours Should I start this now? Does this go in the nest box? They are almost fully feathered, as you can see in my last set of pictures but they seem to be crying more than previous. Yesterday they were really screaming. It almost sounded frantic, and Mom and Dad were eating. After a minute or so of this, we checked on the babies and they were okay, but obviously wanted something. We took them out for a couple of minutes for some cuddles and they instantly quieted down, and then we put them back and they were fine. Curious, isn't it? It seems like Mom only goes in the box to feed now and yes, Dad is helping. Their crops are never empty, but never full (other than nighttime) and I'm just concerned that Mom and Dad can't keep up with them. Is this possible? Thanks. Julie
January 22, 200619 yr You put the cracked seed outside of the box for them. Their crops should only be full at night time, so Mum and Dad are doing just right. And the crying? Well, budgies just never shut up! Their just making sure Mum and Dad don't enjoy themselves - just like my kids do!
January 24, 200619 yr You put the cracked seed outside of the box for them. The box is high on the cage - they can't get out. Hmm. How are they going to get out? Should I maybe put a platform or ????? There is a perch in front of it (the hole in the box) but how are they going to come out? The youngest is 3 wks old today. They are almost fully feathered. I do have a question about the white one's feathers - but will post a picture later (it's still in the camera). It seems the feathers are different on the white chick. They feel softer but don't seem to fluff out quite as much as the other babies' feathers do. Are the white feathered birds different? I don't know how I can put the nest box anywhere else as I am using one of the feeding station holes as the entrance of the box, with the box being outside of the cage itself. But, how do they come out then? Do they wait until Mama and Dad teach them to fly? Thanks Julie
January 24, 200619 yr They come out just like mom and dad through the hole the Perch under (beside) the hole they will use and learn to balance. You will see them jump in and out of the box for a while just like that before getting brave enough to move further a field. The white one is the youngest so compared to the others the feather will still be breaking out of their sheaths which are harder to see since both the sheaths and feathers are the same colour.
