Posted January 1, 200619 yr Hi, my friend's female budgie died in the heat today, and she had some eggs. So, i will be taking the eggs as i have 2 females which have eggs already, but i am not sure on how to best take care of the eggs, or how to put them into the nest of my budgies. Could anyone help me? Thanks, L&L
January 1, 200619 yr Should be okay to just pop them under the hens. If you have nesting material in the boxes, just lightly roll the eggs in that first to ensure they smell the same. Mark the eggs with a pencil, so that if any get kicked out you will know if it was these or not.
January 1, 200619 yr I have only ever had to do it once(the female died from a cold snap -the opposite to you) it was very successful.....I went into the aviary and was lucky enough to have 4 boxes two with eggs unhatched inside and I just put them in when the hen came out(out of the three 2 hatched and were obviously the orphan eggs because they were identical to their parents) the hen I put them in with only had 3 eggs herself. All the others had 5, 6 and 7 to look after. The male (father of orphan eggs)was a problem for me because he was quite upset and then tried to move in on another family. This won't be a problem for you as you don't have the father of your eggs at your house. Like I said I've only experienced this once(with budgies) and I'm sure there is lots of people who can help you with good advice. Good luck
January 1, 200619 yr okay, thanks heaps. I was freaking out because this is the first time my budgies have EVER bred, so i was unsure. Anyways, thanks for your advice, i'll go and do it right now!
January 1, 200619 yr The first time you breed is soooo nervewracking. I know, my first time was just this past year. Ask any and all questions, and let us know the progress
January 1, 200619 yr The only silly question is the one you don't ask. Trust me, I'm sure everyone here's looking at my posts and thinking 'Oh please shut up Caren'!!
January 1, 200619 yr No we never think things like that. Have a look at the basic questions I asked not so long ago with my orphans
January 1, 200619 yr Thanks for all your support. Actually, I do have a question, my firt baby budgie was born a few days after christmas, and none have hatched since. Does this mean that the other eggs aren't fertile or am i just impatient?
January 1, 200619 yr Well, assuming that your hen laid every second day, one should hatch every second day. I would give it say another week, and you will probably find in the mean time that she will toss those eggs out herself.
January 1, 200619 yr Let us know how it goes with the babies/eggs.. and post some pictures if you can. Good luck .
January 2, 200619 yr In my experience at least one should of hatched by now...I'd wait though...you never know....my hens usually disguard the 'bad eggs' so to speak but there's an exception to every rule so who knows they may still hatch.
January 2, 200619 yr Sooooo the egg that i still have in the nesting box that has been unhatched for the last two weeks or so (the last egg) is probably not going to hatch I just dont have the heart to get rid of it although its getting a little bit poopy being kicked aout the nesting box by the babies
January 2, 200619 yr At lest 2 should have hatched if she laid them correctly (every two days), maybe three. But if she had more eggs than that it means other could still be devloping in the egg. If you have not marked them for a hatch date then it is best to leave all for the full 18 days and a week after. Of could as lin and Bec have said the hen might get rid of them sooner. Una- poop on and egg can kill a baby inside and if it is been kicked about it mean mother isn't still on it long enough to keep it warm any more. Edited January 2, 200619 yr by Nerwen
January 2, 200619 yr Yeah I know this egg wont hatch.. The mum stoped sitting on it and sorta chucked it to the side, im just making sure its a bad egg before i toss it
January 3, 200619 yr okay cool....thanks...but nothing's hatched yet...so later on i'll post some pics if i can!...they've got a little poo on them, but so did the one that hatched...how am i supposed to get rid of the poo on the egg without breaking them? I just don't want to break them...they're so fragile and tiny!
January 3, 200619 yr don't worry too much it's when the egg is covered in it, mine had some poop on them too and hatched.
