Napoleon The Newcomer!

Featured Replies

Boxing day was a happy day. I got a big new cage for Newton and got her a friend. Napoleon is currently in a quarantine cage. I've been monitoring him carefully since I noticed his vent started getting dirty. I found that strange since he was completely clean for the first day and a half. After that he started getting dirty around his bottom. I'm keeping watch and monitoring his droppings. We shall see how that goes, may bring him to the vet soon, along with Newton who is due for a checkup.

Anyways, here are some pictures! :D

And Napoleon. He's a cutie. I fell in love with his colors and his curious nature while watching him at the pet store. He would not stand still and he chirps so much!

Napoleon is very pretty. A Yellow face Sky Blue Clearwing.

Try getting some antibiotic and try him on that for 1 week and see how the dirty bottom goes.

It always conserns me as I lost cinnamon with a liver problem. She had a dirty vent as well.

Just wondering, perhaps it's a stupid question but to get the antibiotics is it very expensive?? I'm not exactly flowing with money and i'm just curious.

No you can get them at the pet store.

I think I paid about $8au and it lasts for weeks.

Just get a small bottle.

Upon further inspection tonight I found that his cloaca is really inflammed... it doesn't look normal at all. I'm getting more worried now. I'll definitely stop by the pet store tomorrow to get some and see if his condition improves, if not, I'll have to pay a visit to the vet. What's the name of the antibiotic you have? I'm not quite sure what to look for.

I don't trust pet shop products at all and just a generalised antibiotic wont be much good if you don't know exactly what's wrong. Keep the $8 and put it towards a visit to the vet. You'd be spending your money much better that way. :P Hope there's nothing seriously wrong. What are his droppings like? Normal or runny/unformed?

the droppings are completely normal.

but they build up in the vent area occasionally.

could it be a change in his diet? what did he eat before you got him, is it different than what he eats now? maybe he is just not used to the food? Still a visit to the vet may be best.

i thought so too at first.

But it seems to be more serious than that. Well... I have a feeling it is at least.

I agree with Bea

Clagged Vents

Dr John R. Baker

The Liverpool University Budgerigar Ailment Research Project, sponsored by the Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales including the Isle of Man Budgerigar Society, was started in 1984 and ran for 8 years.

In 1990-1 it was decided that we would investigate the condition of clagged vents in which large amounts of droppings accumulate around the vent and eventually block it and the bird then dies of an accumulation of waste products in the body. Unfortunately on this occasion the fancy let the research project down and the number of samples provided meant that only provisional results could be obtained.

While several causes of the condition were found it was predominantly due either to kidney disease or to malfunctioning of the lower part of the bowel. As yet nothing can be done for the former, which frequently rights itself if the vent is kept clear of obstructions. In some circumstances the latter is treatable.

thank you! I'm going to convince my mom to drive me to the vet.

The avian vet a little far from our house, but I'll bug her. She knows how much my birds mean to me so hopefully she'll take me seriously for once.

I wish you luck with your bird, and THANKYOU for being concerned enough over your pets well being to push for a trip tp the vets. If mum is reluctant, avoid arguing, try and reason and offer (and be sure to do!) extra things around the home to show gratitude for her putting herself out.

Keep us informed, as we always like to know, and learn from the outcome of situations such as these.

Your birds are both beautiful.. I can see how you fell for Napoleon.. It's very sad that he is having possible health problems.. I hope that he's treatable and will be around for many years to come. Best of luck.

thanks  My mom says I'll have to pay the vet bill if it comes up, so thank goodness I'm working a lot this week to come.
