Is My Budgie Really Sick?

Featured Replies

My Budgie Joey I really don't know what is wrong with him?? he is always sneezing and i don't know what to do? He sneezes maybe every 5 mins and it sounds like his nose is stuffed up!

Please if anybody knows

tell me

Thanks Mickey :fear :P [/color]

Mickey, he could have some sort of obstruction in his airways, or an infection building. He really needs to be checked out by your avian vet, as birds have extremely delicate airways. Left unattended it could prove fatal.

Budgies do sneeze from time to time, but frequently and regularly certainly needs checking out.

Good luck!

Err on the side of caution. My cobalt boy (not Baby) imitates my rat sneezing even though the rats are in the kitchen and they're in the bathroom. It worried me, so I took him to the vet. The vet told me it's imitation, but I was praised highly for caring so much about them. He said most people wait until they're seriously ill before taking them to a vet.

Hi thanks

My town does not have a avian and my friend took her cokiteil to the vet and it had a disease and they didn't know what it was so Ya. They gave her medicine and it didn't help i don't know if joe has the same disease

thanks mickey

Is there anything i can do without going to the vet?

Our Vet costs more than $50 dollars to acually see a veternarien!!

I don't have that kind of money.

:)

Mickey, IMHO that vet is charging rather high for a consultation fee. Even if you dont have an avian vet in yourarea, I would ring around ALL local vets, explain that you have a potentially sick bird, explain that money is not easy to come by,and ask for the consultation fees up front. As for home treatment, I personally know of quite a few for various ailments (via advice off my avian vet) HOWEVER, please understand that I am NOT an avian or veterinary qualified person, and advice from a novice could lead to the death of your pet. I am not prepared to take that responsibility on.

HOWEVER, I will advise briefly and loosely if you have no further success with vets. But it will not be medically quallified advice.

As harsh as it may seem, I speak from the heart (and yes, at times i have had to do this) IF you cant afford vet fees, SELL SOMETHING YOU LOVE! Your tv in your bedroom, your bike, your vcr, your dvd player etc. Sell them cheap for a quick sale, but one way or another, pay for that animals treatment.

I say this in all kindness, BUT to me, regardless of personal cost, the animal which never ASKED you to take it in, comes first and foremost. This is a general viewpoint of my own, and NOT a kick at you/not a kick at the poster (for all readers to note)

Please keep us informed.

Anne

I agree with chirpy. Keep trying, sell something if you have to. Do some work around the house or for family members and/or neighbors. Anything you can to earn the money. Do you mean $50 for the office visit or over $50 for everything? The office visit alone at my vet is over $30 so it's not too far off the mark. Vet fees vary quite a bit.

Good luck with your pet.

Everytime we've taken a budgie to the vet it's cost $40 - $50 consutaltion and then a few dollars for any meds they might need, if it helps your bird to get well then it's worth it. :P

Thanks for that and i will try to do what i said.

All the best for my budgie....'

thanks

mikale

Last wo times it's been $50 for the visit plus medication.

I guess it seems steep to me, because I think of all money in English pounds! I forget about different currency values!

Hi Mickey, I'll make sure to ask Rhonda on Saturday about which vet she uses, I know she doesn't use the vet in town. Oh, and to let everybody else know, there is only one vet clinic where we live, and I did take my Cockatiel, Janice there, they give her a bunch of stuff but none helped, I was talking to some people on another bird board I visit, and they said what they give her was useless. So thats why Mickey doesn't want to use the vet in town. I really wish there was an avain vet here, then I could of helped Janice, it really sucks. :) But I will talk to her and hopefully she can contact her vet.

Thanks Megthebugie I hope they can help!!!!!

Signed Joe And ME :)

I did a google search:

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=bird+psittacosis&meta=

You might want to read a few of those articles, I did because if my birds were to get it again then I want to spot it quick so I can treat it. Then you can just ask the vet for the medication, you wouldn't have to pay the $50, you would only have the pay the cost of the medicine.

Megthebudgie i read some of those and it didn't help,

It had nothing to do with anything joey haS??????

Thanks anyway :P:P

Ya maybe it does

But could you still ask on Saturday????

Ask RONDA if it is that okay???

Thanks Mikale

:P

Caring for budgies can be expensive. I cannot even fathom how much I have spent in the past 5 years on vet care and meds alone. Chirpy, I'm not sure about the exact currency exchange, but I think from yours to ours is almost 2 to 1, so in English pounds the $50 bucks is almost 25 pounds. :) Is that still a lot over there?

Some things to think about while you are searching for an avian vet - is there discharge when your bird sneezes? Are the feathers above the nares stuck together? Are the nares all wet after a sneeze? What other symptoms are there? Lethargy? Fluffed up? Sitting on both feet with eyes half closed? If so , get thee to a vet ASAP.

If not, what food do you feed? Some seeds are dustier than others, and will cause your bird to sneeze after eating. But it will be a dry sneeze, or just a little wet. (It won't leave the feathers icky.) Also, if you have the heat on, there may not be enough humidity in the air and this will cause sneezing also. But just because your bird may not have any other symptoms than the sneezing, you should still see a vet to be on the safe side.

thanks for that!!!

Well Joey sounds like his has a stuffed up nose.

He sneezes maybe once every 5 minutes?

Is that Regular Rainbow???

:D

Mickey, is that all day that he sneezes that often? If it is, then please take him to a vet, it would be extremely annoying for him, if nothing else :D Or is it only at times that he sneezes? If it is, can you tell what might be causing the sneezing

I am not sure what causes the sneezes,

I have a dog(jack russlle), i take Joey upstairs at night because it gets cold in the basement were

bedroom is so it might be the changes in the air????

It might be the plants by him?????

Don't know???

My friend works at a pet store and she will ask the owner about a avian that lives in a city near by about Joey!!

the vet we have in our town is not good. They don't really no nothing about birds.

Mickey

:P:D

So I've phoned you already...there should be an avain vet in Winnipeg, but thats 2 1/2 hours away, and I doubt your parents will want to spend the gas money and the vet bills to get up there, I know my parents wouldn't. Thats too bad though, maybe I'll become an avain vet so there will be one in this city! (Laughing out loud).

If the avian vet is totally out of the question then surely there are other regular vets within a reasonable distance? Even my small town has several dog/cat vets. It's not ideal but if that's the only way then at least try to find the one that seems to know the most about birds and give it a shot. This has already gone on far too long. It only takes a few minutes to make a phone call. It also only takes a few moments for a budgie to go from seeming "not too bad" to flopping around the cage in a struggle for its life. It's a horrible sight and I wouldn't want you to have to lose your budgie if there is a way to avoid it.

A "stuffy nose" for a budgie is far more serious than it is to a human.

I'll repeat what I've already stated, there is ONE vet in this city, they do not usually deal with birds. I took Janice there, and they give me a mild antibiotic which was useless to her, didn't help at all and was a waste of money. I had to do my OWN research and then go down and pick up medication that I was told to get at another bird forum, so they are useless really. I think Mikale should find out what is wrong with her bird, and then go down to the vet to get medication, that way she won't have to waste $50 to get them to look at Joey, when they won't know whats wrong with him.

With sneezing being the only symptom showing the only way to find out if something's wrong would be through tests. Just about any disease could have sneezing as a symptom so it would be waaaay too risky to wrongly diagnose the budgie. :dbb1:

"Within a reasonable distance" can mean other cities. The avian vet is over two hours away but maybe she could get to a city 30 minutes or one hour away? As Bea said, there's no way to diagnose a bird based on symptoms alone. Tests must be run. The chances of this happening at a vet's that isn't avian are probably slim but it's still worth looking into, even if she has to go a little outside the city.

Of course, if there is any way to convince the parents to go to the avian vet, that would be ideal. I think most people have to travel to get to their avian vet seeing as they are often hard to find. The closest to me is an hour's drive and the next one is over two hours away.

We have to travel 20mins to get to our avian vet. This isn't very bad at all but the fact that there's a dog/cat vet only a couple of mins drive away annoys him hugely! I reason with him that he'll get what he's paying for if he goes the extra distance rather than paying to hear a diagnoses that i could have come up with.
