Posted December 18, 200519 yr Hello everyone, My name is Cathy, I was on another parakeet site and was linked here by a member. I am very new to this and would love some help. I understand you are all loaded with knowledge of budgies. I purchased a budgie a few weeks ago and would love to know what kind of budgie he/she is. I didn't realize there were so many different types. I think mine is about 3 months old and possibly a male. Can someone please tell me what type of budgie I have and also if possible, the sex? I'm not even sure what the different types are, but am very curious to know what I have. I just LOVE him so much. The day I brought him home he hopped up on my finger. He lets me pick him up pretty much any time. Now he is starting to "chatter" a lot. It weems like he is talking under his breath saying pretty pretty pretty boy and boy o boy o boy. What fun!!!!! Anyway I'd love to hear what you think of "Kernel" and the type of bird he is. Or if in fact he is a he and not a she Thanks for your help....... Here is a picture of him. I hope I posted it okay, as I am not quite sure how to do this yet. I just realized his cere looks much more blue in the picture than in person. In person it is more a purpleish, not blue and not pink sort of in between. Thanks...... Moderator’s Message to user picture removed becuase of bad link look further in the topic for new picture. December 18, 200519 yr Very cute.. in the picture Kernal looks like a male.. If there are white rings around the nostrils he could be a female.. Looks like a Dominant Pied to me.
December 18, 200519 yr Kernel is a sweetie.....such a cute name!! Welcome Cathyp!!! Edited December 18, 200519 yr by Bec
December 19, 200519 yr I love the name :bluebudgie: and HE seems like an angel to have around. Keep staying those words to him and pretty soon he will be saying then loud and clear :ausb: The flash of the camera makes it hard to see the body in that picture but the way the wings are patterns lead to a Dominant Pied as HurdyBirdy said. Hope to see you around here heaps and with tales what what your Kernel is up to.
December 19, 200519 yr Thanks so much for the replies and warm welcomes. So I guess I have a male Dominant Pied I don't care what he is I LOVE LOVE LOVE him!!!!!!! I am just curious to know since I want to learn all about him. Now I have to look up Male Dominant Pied to see what I'm in for
December 20, 200519 yr Hi CathyP and Welcome. You have a beautiful Budgie. Treat him well and make sure he has plenty of fresh fruit and vegtables. Enjoy the Forum.
December 27, 200519 yr Thanks so much for the replies and warm welcomes. So I guess I have a male Dominant Pied I don't care what he is I LOVE LOVE LOVE him!!!!!!! I am just curious to know since I want to learn all about him. Now I have to look up Male Dominant Pied to see what I'm in for Dominant pied only describes his colors/patterns, it doesn't affect his temperment.
December 28, 200519 yr why do some think that he is a Dominant Pied???just trying to pick brains Look at the wings, they have normal patterning then go clear around the flight feathers. Many dominat pied have clear flight feathers and patterning like this on the wings. Where as recessive have a more mottled look.
December 28, 200519 yr He doesn't have any bars on his head.. I'm wondering if that could mean he is a graywing or dilute as well.. Also looks like he could be clearflight. Could be the camera flash though.
December 28, 200519 yr WOW I didn't realize so many posted again. I was getting e mails when someone replied, and now I'm not. Hmmmm. Anyone know why? Anyway I wondered why he didn't have many bars on his head. Everything I've read says young budgies have bars untill they get older. He seems really tiny to me compared to the ones I see in the pet shops. When I bought him, the guy said he was about 9 wks old which would give him a birthday of sometime around September 10th. Does he look to be about 3 1/2 months old? I'm learning a bunch here
December 29, 200519 yr He still looks pretty young, so the guy was probably fairly accurate with his age. It's probably something to do with his coloring: why he doesn't have visible bars.. Bunny (one of my birds) has very, very light coloring so the bars aren't noticible.
December 29, 200519 yr If you can get more photos. One of the side of the head. His Back and His front would be good.
December 29, 200519 yr as Daz said Buit the darkness of his wings don't match with a dilute. Sometimes opline can dim the head bars on a bird, but again the colour on his wings doesn't seem to match that either. So if we can gett some pictures to check out
December 30, 200519 yr I'm sorry I just realized my picture didn't resize and I also don't know how to find where the topic was moved to. I'm going to try to figure it out. I am so sorry if I'm doing this wrong. okay here it is resized. I hope I didn't upset anyone. I think I have it figured out now. Can you better see the markings in this picture? He does have very light lines on his head that don't really show in the picture. I'll try to post a few more here in the proper forum and with the correct size picture's. Thanks again for your help. January 4, 200619 yr That's a better size cathy The topic was moved to Budgie Mutation, Varieties and genetics. I was leaving it where it was since you were introducing us to your little Kernel
January 5, 200619 yr I go with dominant pied too. He has to carry some form of the dilute gene as well, otherwise the bars and shell markings would be black instead of light grey. He is pretty. Welcome to the site. Edited January 5, 200619 yr by Rainbow
January 5, 200619 yr Thanks again for all the help. I am going to post a few more pics of the side of the head and the forehead as some of you requested. I just have to download the Christmas pics first So, so far dominent pied. Did I mention how much I LOVE him????? Oh does anyone know why he has these little stick things pointing out of his head and neck now? Someone said this is because he is molting. I had 2 Red Sided Eclectus parrots and didn't notice this when they went through a molt. Is this something specific to budgies? He scratches it at times. I hope this isn't anything other than molting. Thanks for your help. Edited January 5, 200619 yr by CathyP
