Posted July 8, 200420 yr Hi One of our chicks has left the nest at atbot 4 weeks old. It was out yesterday and back in nest last night. The hen keeps biteing it/poking it. Sometimes the chick chirps loudly. There is no blood. Chcik seems in good health (its flying/climbing). Its always when it goes near the nest. Is this normal? I have not seen it being fed today. It did get some seed/egg food itself. The male is not bothered by the chick. Any advice please?
July 9, 200420 yr when the chicks are ready to leave the nest the hen will attempt to get them out as she will be ready to breed again, keep a close eye on it as some hens and cocks will attack the chicks and kill them at this point
July 12, 200420 yr When mine first left the nest box, it took about a week for them to leave completely. They would float in and out, but would always be fed by one or the other of the parents. It wasn't until the second clutch of eggs began to be laid that Skittles wouldn't let them back in the box. Your male should feed the chick if he/she isn't allowed back in the box at all anymore. But I would watch them closely to make sure.
July 12, 200420 yr Hi Thanks Well all 4 chicks have left the nest. I have not seen female/male feed the chicks. But they are doing well and biteing has stopped. Chicks seem to be feeding themselves. Oh and she laid another egg!! Thanks again
