Posted December 14, 200519 yr Jangles is really starting to get me concerned of 'his' gender. I took the word of the guy selling them to me, since he is the president of the budgie club here i figured he knew what he was talking about. But so far tootie has lost all of her brown from a moult and has almost come back into condition yet Jangles hasn't changed at all! 'His behaviour doesn’t' really match either of the sexes, he doesn’t' do much at all really. He isn't sick so don't worry about that, but he doesn't warble with Pie and Marine or get jealousy over things in the cage, but that would come down to the fact he is the lowest of the flock. He doesn't try to flirt with anyone and Ringo in fact chases him away from her when the mood hit's her that she has to own every space of the branch. When he does sing it is simply to call out to the ones out side with Freckle and Tootie. So I thought I would stretch all of your brains and see what you all think. the shape and size seems to point to male look how brown she is Edited December 14, 200519 yr by Nerwen
December 14, 200519 yr I've got to say Male. The look and texture of his cere is male. But he may have some gherkin Illness..... sorry to say Nerwen. Tell me when the last time that Bea was over yor aviary. She didn't talk to him about Gherky did she?????
December 14, 200519 yr Author Oh never thought of that illness. Problem solved he can be a good 'father' figure for the young ones
December 14, 200519 yr Nerwen, I see your confusion! The cere is mostly smooth like a males, but it is so pale! It seems to look a little rough at the bottom, which points toward female....hmmmm. How long have you had him again?
December 14, 200519 yr No expert here but the other ceres I saw where people were asking questions would point to female yes? With the white around the nostrils? It is not a real bright blue. But with all the mutations can ceres be off color and tend to be lighter? Edited December 14, 200519 yr by lovey
December 14, 200519 yr Definitely looks like a female out of breeding condition to me. It's just so light-colored! I've never seen a male with a cere that light but I've seen plenty of females with ceres like that get mistakened for males. For instance, this bird: She's definitely a female. This picture was taken after she'd just finished raising a clutch. I think you've got yourself a girl.
December 14, 200519 yr Author err I've had Jangles and Tootie for umm..... july some time. So almost 6 months. Eterri- *Sigh* that's what it is seeming to me more and more. It hasn't changed since them one little bit, it hasn’t gotten smoother or flakier. He bite's Hard and doesn't let got which with Rainbows lot points to a boy. There isn't anything wrong with him. It just seems wrong for a president of a budgie club to not be able to pick a male from a out of condition female. Edited December 14, 200519 yr by Nerwen
December 15, 200519 yr It does seem weird, yeah. But everyone makes mistakes I suppose, and budgies are confusing to sex. I think the way he/she bites is more common with females. Behavior's such an unreliable way to sex them though... I've got a female that bites a lot. But then I've got one that has never bitten me. Then there is my female who has only bitten twice but each time she hangs on for dear life. When I first got her I spent a considerable amount of time trying to "ignore the bite" while she was hanging from the flesh of my wrist. And of course my male has never bitten me either. They're all so individual but far more people complain of having bitey females than those who complain of bitey males. Maybe it's time for you to get more budgies...even things up you know.
December 15, 200519 yr Author ahh yes the perfect solution... more budgies I almost did get one the other day, that violet spangle I saw weeks back at the pet shop was still there and it is clear that it's a boy now. I was itching and I’m sure if some staff member came in to ask if I was okay I would have got him. But the fact that he didn't move the whole time I was watching and was sleeping heavily, had be tad worried. Edited December 15, 200519 yr by Nerwen
December 15, 200519 yr A violet spangle sounds lovely. I've only seen a few spangles in the US.. I wonder if they're not to common here. Jangles really does look like a hen to me. And of course my male has never bitten me either My female taught my male to bite.. He always follows her lead.. Its funny though.. he has this look in his eye that says "I know I'm supposed to do this right?"
December 15, 200519 yr I think they're incredibly rare here. I've never seen one in person and in all the parrot forums I frequent I hardly ever see an American post a picture of or talk about a spangle budgie. Which is sad because... I want one!!
December 15, 200519 yr Author odd I see them ALL the time over here, but I must say I thought Feckle was different when I saw her, so maybe i've trained my eye to see them :dbb1:
December 16, 200519 yr I say female. Look at how light the cere is. No male would have "any" hint of brown.
December 16, 200519 yr it looks pretty much like my hens when out of condition No male would have "any" hint of brown you can get males with brown ceres but this is down to ilness
December 16, 200519 yr Author you wanta know the funny thing. It's easier to think of Jangles as girl!!! I went to talk tot he the other day and Miss slipped out and it just...fitted, seemed right. SO I guess I had a feeling for a long time that he was in fact a she. Oh well Just as well since Ringo hate Jangles Time to go on the look out again for another match for Ringo, before her and her ma fight over Pie again :ausb:
December 18, 200519 yr Oh well.. poor you.. more budgies.. who would want that When does the search "officially" begin? Take the camera to the store.. and we'll tell you which one to get..
December 18, 200519 yr Author (Laughing out loud), it starts now, start look while i don't really need a new one and I will find the perfect one
December 18, 200519 yr Cool. and when you get your boy if it is before or around the holiday you can call it Kris (for Kris Kringle)
December 19, 200519 yr Author :bluebudgie: Does that make jangles some sort of Missing link bird? :ausb: Edited December 19, 200519 yr by Nerwen
