Posted December 10, 200519 yr (Sorry I posted this in the wrong place, could someone please move it to the proper location? Thanks) NOTE *Really bad Wing Clip.... Wing not missing totally! * Bought this little guy today from a breeder. I asked him to clip his wings because I would like to tame him. I went back 1 hour later and he was already in a box and ready to go. When I got him home and put him in the cage I realized that he only has one wing. The guy cut off my bird's wing... well half of it anyway. I am so ticked I could cry. Will it grow back? And does anyone know what the colour mutation he is? I was looking for a Yellowfaced Albino but I fell in love with this little guy the minute I saw him, I knew he was the right one for us. Thanks. This is Sunny Boy... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v687/Bum...Pictures007.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v687/Bum...Pictures006.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v687/Bum...Pictures008.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v687/Bum...Pictures005.jpg Edited December 12, 200519 yr by chirpy
December 11, 200519 yr What a cutie I agree that the guy got a bit excited with the wing clip!!! It will definately grow back but it will take a while.... I bet Daz and Nerwen will know what mutation he is!! I haven't got a clue
December 11, 200519 yr It's okay, a retired budgie breeder told me to do that as it keeps them off center. Most people prefer to do both wings for aesthetic reasons. (besides it looks really goofy) Don't worry, the wing will grow back sooner than you want it too. :parrot:
December 11, 200519 yr He's adorable and looks like a recessive pied to me. Any idea how old he is? If he's an adult and his iris ring doesn't become light then he's definitely recessive pied. About the wing clip, I have never seen one that starts so far UPWARDS on the wing!! It looks like the number of feathers cut is okay but why they cut so far up is beyond me. Also, the one wing clip is pretty sucky. It throws them off balance and that can be dangerous. If you've got a good avian vet maybe they could try and even things up a bit (of course by evening it up I mean a proper clip on the opposite side, not one that goes so far up!). Thankfully, it will grow back with your budgie's next molt (as mentioned) and he shouldn't suffer any long term consequences as a result. Poor little thing. Sometimes breeders can be as clueless as pet store staff! Edited December 11, 200519 yr by eterri
December 11, 200519 yr Oh my Lord, I thought the guy had cut off a WING! he hasnt, thank (my) God! A one wing trim. clip etc, is NOT good. Imagine trying to RUN in a stiletto ansd a trainer, you are destined for a mishap. His over clipped wing WILL grow back, But I would strongly sugest a good trim of the unclipped wing in the meantime, to give him a sense of balance. Im sure he MEANT no harm, but this guy dosent know POO about safe clipping. My guess is that he is in his 50's, or near enough? Im open minded to wing clipping, I dont LIKE it, but I do believe it has its place (my RB2/Galah cockatoo) MUST be kept clipped, as he has a neurological disorder. He can not even run across the floor without falling over. In flight, he can risk, and does, quite severe harm to himself. So, my beautiful wild firend must be robbed of his most precious gift, FLIGHT. I dont like taking it from him, but I do, and I always will. This guy has made a pigs bottom of clipping your birds wing, but it CAN be rectified. His complete wing needs a trim, a constant trim, until both wings match up, then, I hope, you will see fit (tame or untame) to let your bird be a bird. Im not dissing you, Im itching with irritation at this guys method. Planet of the Apes comes to mind. Let your avian vet soothe this unbalanced passage with a proffessional clip on the complete wing, until the balance is back. Then, ether trim BOTH wings LIGHTLY, or let him be free flighted, as his God intended. In all warmth, Anne Edited December 11, 200519 yr by chirpy
December 11, 200519 yr I hear you loud and clear chirpy. I wish I had not asked him to clip my baby. I will be taking him to see the vet soon and will get him to even poor Sunny Boy up as much as possible. The breeder is in his 60's and has been breeding for 20 yrs, so I thought I could trust him. At least Sunny appears to be healthy and happy and I guess when all is said and done, that is the most important thing.
December 11, 200519 yr OH, and at least he has a caring owner who realises a mistake has been made and will do all needed to rectify it. Welcome to the forums
December 11, 200519 yr Hello What a beautiful little budgie I'm loving the last picture you posted of him His little wing will grow back with time.. LUCKILY :ausb: When i read the title of this topic "New Bird WITHOUT Wing" I was thinking ..Oh my gosh :fear how can a bird NOt have a wing?? (Laughing out loud) its an understatement to say i was relieved to see he did infact have two wings Cheers  Una
December 11, 200519 yr ohhhh how adorable...you really got his best side in that last photo!!He looks that cute!! :ausb:
December 11, 200519 yr :ausb: That last photo is GORGEOUS!! I also thought i was going to see a budgie completely missing a wing.
December 11, 200519 yr (Laughing out loud) I think she tricked us all on the topic name Sunny Boy is a looker and he looks like a smart one with that last photo. It looks as if the breeder has left the last two feathers on the other wing, but cliped them all. This is an old style clip which i guess he muct have learn from and stuck with. Glad you found a cutie to join your family and yesi would say he was a recessive pied.
December 11, 200519 yr I dont think the breeder betrayed your trust, he's just set in the old ways of a single wing trim (or, in this case, more like a hack) Even some vets still offer to trim one wing, which surprises me greatly. Dont go blaming yourself, you didnt ASK for a hack, and his flights will grow back in time. He really is a gorgeous litle bird, isnt he, I could just pick him up and snuggle that sweet little body
December 11, 200519 yr Sorry about the title guys. I wrote this shortly after I took him out of the box and saw the work he did on Sunny Boy's wing. I was shocked and alarmed because I had never seen a cut so severe. My apologies for alarming everyone. He seems to be settling in nicely, he is stepping up on my finger briefly when I press gently on his belly which I am thrilled about because I thought it would be a while before I could do that with him. He does not stay on my finger for long but it is a great start.
December 11, 200519 yr Hi KayKay, and welcome. Do you know how old Sunny is? He is beautiful, and I would say green recessive pied. Baby budgies will go through their first molt at about 14 - 16 weeks of age (3 1/2- 4 months old) and will molt out all flight and tail feathers. It will take at least a month to complete, but his wing feathers will grow back in. If he's older than that, the next full molt probably won't be until he is close to a year old. I agree both sides should be trimmed evenly, otherwise he is an injury waiting to happen. Having one wing trimmed keeps them very off-balance and does nothing for confidence. I'd get the vet to even up both sides as soon as you can. It's great that you have already made some progress with him on step-ups. Congratulations!
December 11, 200519 yr I was told he is about 6 months old so I guess we have another 6 months to go before his next full molt.
December 12, 200519 yr Hi kayKay, Ive edited the title for you, as it was a bit stomach churning and you seemed a bit concerned about it yourself. Hope you like this wording better
December 12, 200519 yr Thanks chirpy! I tried to edit it myself but realized that I could not edit the title. The way you worded it is perfect, thank you. (Hope it didn't churn too many stomachs )
