Posted December 7, 200519 yr Will cockatiels and rosa bourkes breed together in an avairy? Also is it easier to colony breed budgies or have them in a cage together? :budgiedance: :bluebudgie:
December 7, 200519 yr Definitely seperate the budgies into breeding cages, the one time i tried colony breeding all my hens tried to butcher each other! :budgiedance: Even when i seperated them into breeding cages but put the breeding cages in the aviary they attacked each other through the bars. I ended up having to put them in my bedroom.
December 7, 200519 yr Author Thanks Bea, i always separate my pairs when breeding anyway Now does anyone know about the cockatiels and rosa bourkes? :budgiedance: :bluebudgie:
December 7, 200519 yr I'm not a breeder buuut I will say based on cockatiel experience and what I've read that I would definitely NOT breed the two in the same aviary. Breeding can turn a normally docile 'tiel into a moody little monster. If one of the bourkes got too close I'd fear it would be injured by a cockatiel protecting his/her nest. Not to mention, because of the size difference it makes it even more dangerous to the bourkes. I've heard bourkes are docile but again, there's no telling how territorial they might get when breeding. I'm just not a big fan of mixing parrot species but I imagine it working better if the aviary is very large and breeding isn't being done.
December 7, 200519 yr I have to say I'm not a big fan of colony breeding, I think breeding pairs should be kept seperate whilst breeding. Saves a heap of problems and vet bills. Breeding can be expensive enough, without asking for problems
