Breeding Without A Nest Box - Inadvertant Budgie Breeder Lays An Egg A

:) Thought I would start a whole new post. Put the pair of budgies in a cooler room with very few hours of natural light for about a week and a half. Felt so sorry for them that I put them back in the living room with my other 5 cages of other species birds. There is once again, an egg on the floor today with the female sitting on it and it is SNOWING as I write this. The happy pair can SEE the snow from their location next to the patio window but I guess they are adoring each other so much that they can't realize what the snow is. They are both rescue birds from the humane society, male purportedly 11 years and female almost 2 years. I KNOW THAT IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO BREED WITHOUT A NEST BOX but these guys keep doing it and defying the odds. Will put them back in "jail" and not bend until Christmas. Separating them didn't work, everybody was very unhappy and I think I was the most stressed and unhappiest of all.

 :P

They sure are keen to have a family! :)

Lands sake! I can't believe how determined that female is to have a baby! You've heard about the maternal instinct? Well, that budgie IS the maternal instinct :P

:P They are driving me right NUTS!!! Thankfully my lovebird didn't have cancer and hopefully the vet has removed the feather follicle that kept getting ingrown and infected, stitches out in a weeks time. Unfortunately my Rosey Bourke got pneumonia and has been @ the vets for the last 3 days but she will be okay. My "kids" sure keep me busy and poor!!! :P:P

:ausb: YYYAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!! The mom isn't bothering to sit on the egg on the cage floor so I have chucked it. I am sure this is all of the male's doing anyhow. He loved to care for all his babies and the mom and just loved all his babies while mom cared less. My question, do budgies just have sex for sex's sake? Like can they do it and not produce eggs? Thanks. :P

 I take back my YYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY!!! My computer has been gone for the last 2 days but in that time the happy couple has laid yet another egg and the little miss is sitting on it and they are back into "jail" until Christmas. WHY won't they stop!!!! I know, I know, I have to separate them but I just can't do that again, better that they be together in jail. :D

I have never heard of a problem as severe as yours :(Laughing out loud): Maybe you should stop them from watching dirty movies

:D They make me green with envy. Sigh........ I only watch family movies here and G rated shows!!!

The wildest thing we watch is "Survivor" !

(Laughing out loud)! I think this is getting to the point where the only thing you can do is laugh. Have you tried giving them a clutch of white marbles or fake eggs so they can sit on them all they like and nothing will hatch?

 I told my weird story to a reputable owner of a large pet store and he didn't think that fake eggs would work in my case. HOWEVER, they will be a Christmas present for my pair after I bring them out on Christmas Day (actually December 24rth as I need the bedroom for company). I will let them breed again in the spring if they want to but hopefully the geriatric male will have gotten it out of his system by then. Everybody @ work thinks this is terribly amusing but I don't, it's added stress that I do not need.

Still can't win a lottery.............. :D

:ausb: But I guess statisticaly wise, it would be okay to get a female with a male as NORMALLY they should not breed without a nest box, probably in the 99% no breeding range, I am unfortunately one of the rare exceptions. Like if you accidentally ended up with a female, don't take her back!! Enjoy your new budgie! :dbb1:

:ausb: And the owners of my babies are so pleased that they want me to let the pair go to it, I have 3 people interested and requesting any babies!! Pigs will fly before that happens!! I guess the baby owners are very happy that they got "tame", pretty birds, but I repeat, NO WAY (until maybe summer here). :ausb:

:ausb: Almost 2 weeks now without an egg, YAY!! Brought the loving couple out into the mainstream today to thoroughly scrub their cage and give them some flying time. Put them back in "jail" 2 hours later. Kinda worried, it has been very sunny here but they do have their natural light hours and room temp reduced. Christmas will come for them on December 23rd when they are rejoined with the flock. :grbud:

Great Going but.... I thought Christmas was on the 25th December

Not if your a budgie Daz, Christmas is every day then -_-

:D Right you are but I need to reclaim the bedroom they are in for company!! hehehehohoho

-_-

Okay, my breeding without a nest box pair are back out in the living room with the rest of the birds. First the female (and then the male) are rounding out their wings like they are too hot, are they just recoiling from the cooler temps of "jail" (the spare bedroom) or preparing to once again, procreate? sigh

Disregard this topic, don't need any advice, male was mounting female as I walked by. ARGH!! No choice now but to separate them for a month or so. It sure didn't take them long, I just don't get it. I guess they want to provide me with eternal Christmas presents for rescuing them.

:(:P :ausb:  :(

:P Would like to put her up for adoption and get a male for Comet but I just cannot do it, who knows what lousy home she would end up as she is already a rescue, will make the best of things, maybe get Comet another male budgie and Star another male buddie as there is no way she would continue on her breeding ways or would she? Don't like 2 females together as it just doesn't work. Opinions? This is just too weird. Really don't have the room but will make it work if I have to.

:P

OH BOY, Yippeee!! Got an EGG from the laying without a nest box guys who have only been out of "jail" a couple of days. Will separate them for sure after the 27th and get them each an sex appropriate companion, will get older "rescue" birds so we can tell the sex for sure. Cannot believe this, the male is 11 and they haven't got a nest box. This is the smallest egg that they have ever laid but it is into the garbage tomorrow for sure. :) :fear

If it's a small egg it's probably a dud anyway. Separating them definitely seems to be the only option left hey? :dbb1: Silly budgies.

:ausb: Yes, seems so sad to separate them as they are madly in "budgie love' but Star is going to get eggbound eventually so I must do it for the health of her and sanity of myself. Comet will adapt to any cage mate, he loves 'em all! :D

28th December

:ausb: I have been thinking and thinking, what about hormone shots for the female? Comments? :ausb:

1st January

:ausb: Off I go to the vets' on Tuesday with the happy couple and their addled eggs, divine or medical intervention is required here. They have never had to go to the vet before, healthy birds that they are, and Star's cere is still in PRIME breeding condition. I never want to see another egg in my life so hopefully 2006 will be the end of it all!!. :fear :dbb1:

What sort of thing other than separation can prevent them laying eggs? A sex change for the female?

:P This is getting too WEIRD, even for my birds. The female is laying on the cage floor on top of her 3 addled eggs (they seem to knock it off when she has 5) and the male is laying on her back with his feet tucked under him, sorta like a double decker laying on the eggs. Tuesday and hormone shots cannot come fast enough!:D

Oh please get pictures for us  I know it's not terribly funny to you at the moment, but when it is all sorted you will be as hysterical with laughter as we all are :(Laughing out loud):

;) Not that I can afford it, with having to buy a new computer, and Christmas bills, etc. went and bought a Nikon dig camera today, will try and figure it out in the morning, told the girl I wanted one that was idiot proof. No, I am not amused and it is good I can post my frustrations here;if you phone a friend they either don't understand or don't care. My co-workers can see how agitated and upset I get and know I don't need anymore stress in my life, but they can't comprehend the situation either. Hopefully, my avian vet (and she's a good one), can make some sense of it all. :ygbudgie:

Why don't you just separate them? :P Excessive laying is dangerous and I just followed the story of someone from another board who recently lost her budgie despite extreme efforts by the vet. It was heartbreaking.

If nothing else is working the next step is to separate them. Unless you're really wanting them to breed, I can't see why they're allowed to continue going through the motions and attempting it. It's not really a laughing matter, it's risky for the female.

:D I have already tried that but couldn't stand the screaming!! And whenever the cage door was opened, they tried to escape to each other, it was just awful!!! :P

Put their cages next to each other? Or do they still scream when you do that?

I mean, if it comes down to your bird becoming egg bound/prolapsing or having to listen to screaming it would be better to just put up with the screaming. Maybe give them same-sex cage partners? I can't remember what the situation is with your other budgies but if you could pair them up differently (same-sex) that might help.

Either way, it's obvious that nothing is going to stop them aside from separating them. As noisy as it is, that's sometimes what we have to put up with.
