My Budgie Has Relapsed ....

Hey everyone,

You might remember me from a few weeks ago...My budgie, Mrs.Sprinty (haha :) Wierd name, I know) had diarrhea and was breathing strangely. She went to the vet, was put on antibiotics, and got completely better. A few weeks later, and she's back to that condition but way worse. She has lost a lot of weight in the past couple of days, despite eating, and she is puffed up and not moving much. I've been giving her chlorpalm, an antibiotic, and am making a vet appointment tomorrow...

...I hope she pulls through, I love her so much...and her mate would be so insanely lonely, he's already calling to her and going kind of crazy (jumping around the cage) trying to figure out where she is. She's in a seperate room, to keep her mate from getting sick.

I really don't know what to do...

I do remember your bird, but I can't remember if the vet did poop and blood tests last time? If not, they definately need to be done this time. It's great that you have isolated her, but do let the vet know about her boyfriend, he would need to have treatment as well. Some birds can hide illnesses for a long time, and show no symptoms, but still reinfect her when she goes back in with him. Please let us know how Mrs Sprinty ( I love that name :) ) goes. Try giving her some egg biscuit (easier to digest), or something similar if you can. They can starve so quickly, and if she isn't eating, she will find that whatever it is will affect her more rapidly.

No, the vet didn't do any tests last time and she is definitley going to do it this time, despite the money protests from my parents.... :)

Mrs.Sprinty's name has a wierd story... Her boyfriend is named Feliz, and when I first got him, I clipped his wings to tame him. He would run across the floor and stretch out his legs, so we called him Sprinty as a nickname...because he sprints!

So, she is Mrs.Sprinty because she is "married" to Feliz, or Mr.Sprinty.

B) Yeeeeeah, I'm cool. :P

A few hours ago, I held her in my hands and murmered to her until she fell asleep...I told her how much I loved her and apologized for not saving her. I knew she was going to die. She couldn't get up off the bottom of the cage, she wouldn't eat anything I gave her, and she wasn't drinking. During the last hour, she climbed up onto the perch and then an hour later, my sister found her dead on the bottom of the cage. Feliz was caling to her, over and over again...we put her body into his cage to show him that she was gone, and he went down and inspected her, groomed her, and now he seems to be very sad. He isn't singing, he's just sititing...

This is horrible, I loved her so much, she had an appointment tomorrow...I can't beleive she's gone ,and I don't know how feliz is going to cope.

I'm so sorry Mrs. Sprinty, that I Couldn't save you.

:P

Oh, my heart dropped when I started to read this, you poor thing. Can I suggest that you still take Feliz to the vet tomorrow, and explain the situation. I highly recommend taking some of Mrs Sprinty's droppings for testing, just in case she has passed anything on to Feliz.

You did the best that you could, there was nothing else you could do, and she was with you at the end, she knew love right to the last moment. My thoughts are with you.

:P Will keep my fingers (and wings) crossed for you. Have made a few expensive trips to the avian vet the last month but it's all worth it. Good Luck to Mrs Sprinty and you!! :P

Oh hpw sad I am to read this. My heart goes out to you. Please, despite your pain and loss at this sad time, follow Lins extremely good advice, and get the other sweet bird checked. Id recommend that he was put on a course of anti-biotics anyway, it can only do good in a situation such ast this.

Deepest condolences for your loss.

Anne

I'm so sorry, I'm crying as I type this, I know how you feel, it's dreadful to loose a budgie you love, I've been there. My heart goes out to you. Lisa

I'm so sorry to hear this. :P I hope that whatever she had wasn't passed on to Feliz.

Hugs to you, I do know how you feel. Lossing a beloved pet is very painful, it is amazing how painful it can be. Time will heal and your memories with her will always last. I agree Lin's advice should be taken seriously, let us know how Mr. Sprinty is doing.

:) My computer crashed when I was making my last reply and everything is out of order. Sorry to hear of your loss and I hope you and Mrs Sprinty's companion can get over your sadness soon. :)

Oh a very sad post to read. So sorry, don't be too hard on yourself-you couldn't have done much more. :)

awww such a sad post :)

im so sorry, but lins advice is very good and very neccessary here, i hope your other birdie will be okay.

good luck x

I'm having trouble convincing my parents that I should take my apparantly unsick bird to the vet...this might take a bit of work...

Okay, well let me give you some facts and arguments for them, I'm sure others will add their thoughts too.

Firstly, don't forget to play the ' You need to teach me to be a responsible pet owner' card.

Facts: Budgies can act perfectly well, although very ill, until it is too late - as you saw with Mrs Sprinty. In the wild it is a certain death sentence to act ill, so nature dictates that they hide the illness. They can hide it for up to a month or longer.

He will not get over this without treatment.

Treatment is cheaper if you get it sorted early, before the disease gets too serious.

Diseases in birds can be passed on by contact with droppings, or even via the air.

Birds have feelings too, would your parents let your dog or cat suffer an illness without treatment?

I hope you can convince them, I know you want to do the right thing.
