Posted November 23, 200519 yr Angel and Oscar have been in the same cage for only a matter of weeks, and at first, they didn't seem to get along. By the first week together however, I could see they were already developing a strong bond. I always see Oscar kissing, feeding, and preening Angel. What they did today however, was pretty shocking..and actually pretty hysterical. For the first time, I saw Oscar continuously trying to mount angel, and they mated.. until he fell off. :(Laughing out loud): I am actually very concerned about this behavior though. Angel is supposedly 3-4 months old, but hasnt gone through her first moult yet, and is still smaller than Oscar.(Im guessing she -not- mature yet then, right?) But is it possible for her to lay eggs of any kind yet?? I am especially concerned because she is not yet on a healthy diet because we are still struggling to convert her to pellets, and she hardly gets any calcium. What problems could arise if they continue to mate like this?
November 23, 200519 yr How old is Oscar? I went through similar circumstances when my birds were babies, as dad wanted to mate with the babies too when they got to be around that age. A hen can lay eggs as young as 5 or 6 months old. You need to make sure the "deed" never gets completed. You are right to be concerned about your hen's health, it is not good at all for her to lay that young. She probably has no idea what Oscar's intentions really are, being that young she is probably still glad for him to feed her.
November 23, 200519 yr I cant be quite sure of Oscars age, because when I got him last January, he was already mature. I would say he is probably almost 2 years or so. I dont know how to stop them from mating though, because they are so happy together, and the reason I got Angel was to keep Oscar company. They are so happy together- I just dont want Angel to become eggbound or go through alot pain and stress of laying eggs, especially at a young age. Separating the two would be the last thing I would want to do.. :ausb:
November 23, 200519 yr It may be what you need to do. You might need to get out Angel's quarantine cage and set it directly next to Oscars. You should be able to let them out together since you will be there to supervise, but keeping them in the same cage right now is probably not a good idea. Oscar might be a little upset at first, but as long as they can see each other and sit next to each other in seperate cages things should be fine.
