Posted November 21, 200519 yr Hi! i have a pair of budgies that seem very intrested in each other but when the one wants to breed the other dosnt want to. my male,Weasley, seems to get nervouse of or the female, Margarita, runs away. i know that they are intrested because they feed eachother, Margarita gose into the nesting boxand calls to him and Weasley flirts with her by bobing his head and steps on her tail. Is there anything i should do to encourage them. Also i think another problem is that my other budgie Gizmo wants atention and he gose into the nesting box. Will that prevent them from breeding? thanks for any info
November 21, 200519 yr Hi BudgieBabe13, and welcome to the forums. It sounds like you have 3 budgies in your breeding cage. The unpaired one will need to be moved to another cage, or problems may ensue. How old are your breeding pair? How long have you had the nest box in? What are they fed? Budgies will breed once they feel conditions are right to ensure the survival of the chicks. These conditions include (but are not limited to) sufficient daylight hours, sufficient green food, and a secure place to lay. Your birds should be on a healthy diet of more than just seed. Tell us a little more about them and we can give you more advice on what to try.

Its not really a breeding cage andi have a freind who had a succesful breeding pair in a regular cage with about five budgies in it so mabey mine are just picky (Laughing out loud). ive hade my first bird gizmo for about two years and the ones that seem intrested in breeding are both older than a year. ive had the nesting box in there for about 2 months. they get light but not stright sunlight because its not out long where i live and its way to cold for them near the windows so right now they are in my room which is the warmest room in the house. i make sure i give them a feel of night and day though by leaving my light on in the day and turning it off at night.i feed them seed sprinkled with this oyster stuff that supposed to encourage breeding but ive only just starterd that i also give them millet cuttle bone and this dried fruit mix and every once in a while if i have some yougart. i was planning on taking gizmo out of the cage anyway but iwas also told that if i take one of the pair out for about a week that it will also encourage them. Is there any truth to that and if there is dose it matter which gender i take out? pleas provide as much info as you like thank you!!!!
November 21, 200519 yr If you've had the nest box in for two months, I'd take it out for a little while. I've heard of removing one of the pair to stimulate them to breed once they are put together again, but I've never done that before. I think if you put the breeding pair by themselves that would be best. They will be able to form a stronger pair bond, and by taking away "competition" for the nest box they might settle down and begin to breed. If you can I'd move the pair to their own cage, let them get settled, and in a month or so add the nest box again. You should also add egg food and raw veggies like brocolli, spinach, kale, and carrots to their diet. Access to a cuttlebone, mineral block, or calcium perch is also a good idea. Are you able to seperate your birds into different cages?
