Hi All,

 

Until today we had two budgies, one female and one male. The female has passed away and I was wondering if anyone knows how the male will deal with her death. Should I just put mirrors in the cage with him or is there something else that should be done to help him. We would preferably prefer not to replace her but I need to know what way I can help him when he starts to miss her.

if you don't want to try and get him to bond more with you mirrors might be an idea, give him some one to talk to. If you want him to bond with you then give him more attention then before.

He will be down for a time but if you befriend him more as nerwen said. He will bond to you. I personelly don't like mirrors. If you can't bond with him, what about a new friend. another budgie.

Your bird will grieve, so extra attention is very important. His routine is all messed up now, so if you can begin a new one that he will look forward to, that would be a good start. If you would prefer not to get another bird, that is understandable but you will have to be the "bird replacement". I wouldn't recommend a mirror, just spend more time softly talking to him. Is he tame? Do you let him out of his cage regularly? I think those parts of his routine should stay the same. He may act depressed, he may act agitated, he may constantly chirp for his mate for a bit. Unless you continually reward that behavior, it will pass and he should start to act like himself again.
