Twin Budgies?

Featured Replies

hi guys

a close friend of mine who has been breeding budgies for 20 years rang me tonight and asked me if i ever heard of this. must admit i havent so would like to share it with you all and get some feedback.

Mark (my friend) told me he had a hen sitting with four eggs, first one hatched on time, second egg due to hatch , he looked in the box and saw the broken egg shell but didnt see the chick. by now its time for egg three to hatch so this time he looks in the box and sees three chicks but still two eggs the hen had discarded at the other end of the box and were cold, therefore he has 3 chicks out of two eggs. with that he opened the other two eggs and to his amazement found a dead chick in one egg and two dead chicks in the other.

the eggs with two chicks in were bigger eggs than usual.

with that mark rang me and asked me to look on the internet to see if i could find anything about this, searched google and couldnt find anything, so i joined this club in the hope of finding someone else who has experienced this.

thanks guys and look forward to hearing what you think

I've heard of it, but it's really rare :fear I don't know anything else though

never heard of this before well not hatching and living

Sounds like it is a very rare occurance, I have never heard of it, but am fascinated!

That sounds really exciting! Are the chicks normal size or littler than normal?

Never heard of it but I can see it would be possable.

It would kinda be like a double yolker in hen eggs.

Hope all goes well for him and he should give this pair another try next time to see if he can get it again.

thanks for your comments peeps, i have seen double yolkers in hen eggs to but like most of you not heard of it in budgies. my mate has all intentions of breeding this pair of birds again to see what the outcome will be, more twin budgies hopefully :-)

will keep you all informed of any future developments

Sounds fascinating and I would have thought entirely possible.

I was told once, by a chook farmer, that double yolkers are produced by the young hens. Is it possible that the budgie who is laying these is young?

oh yes I remember that bit of info too now :) It might be possible but as stated at the start this guy Mark as been breeding for 20 years, surely he would know not to breed any under the age of a year.
