Hi,

I recently bought a budgie for my son. It is an absolute dear. My only concern is that it seems to sneeze on a fairly regular basis. Not a lot, but often enough that I am a bit concerned.

 

Is it normal for a budgie to sneeze now and again?

 

It shows no sign of illness other than the sneeze.

My budgie is 10weeks old and still sneezes too but only when he gets near something that is a strange smell to him or gets something on his beak. I am no expert unlike some on here who will probably reply to you soon but if he is happy and feeding drinking and does not just sit there on his perch all day huddled then you can be reassured that he is okay just keep an eye on him to see if he stops eating.

Rainbow used to sneeze a lot also. We went through some trips to the vet and several nasal flushes (which didn't help - he wasn't sick but we thought he might have had a hull stuck in his nares). Then I accidentally stumbled upon a cure for his sneezing. I changed his seed. Now he rarely sneezes. I don't think he was allergic to any ingredient, I think it was a little more dusty, because he also sneezes sometimes after eating millet because he gets the hulls in his nose. He just seems to be more sensitive to dust than any other bird I have. Is there a pattern to when he sneezes? If you have the a/c on very cool it will make the birds sneeze also. As long as the sneeze is a dry sneeze he is probably okay. If there is discharge when he sneezes, that is a different matter. I have always taken any new bird I got to the vet within a day or two of purchasing them, so if he hasn't been yet it might not be a bad idea if you are concerned.

Teapot used to sneeze quite a lot, and I used to worry myself silly over it, I noticed that it usually happened when he got a bit excited tho! I kept mentioning it to my vet, who said Teapot was actually fine, (after checking him thoroughly)

Now and again, Teapots sneezes were a bit 'splashy' but only very slightly, and he always managed to get me full in the face when he had a splashy sneeze!

keep an eye on your bird tho, because sneezing CAN be a sign of a respiratory infection, especially wet sneezing. In the main though, if its just an intermitent thing, and he is bright and happy and eating well, its usually just a bit of dust irritaion, or, as in teapots case, excitement, (Laughing out loud)! Do you have a good avian vet? Never be afraid of ringing them up for advice if you are concerned. I pester my vet to death if im worried, he's used to me now! :(Laughing out loud):

My budgies tend to sneeze when they're covered up and I turn out the light. I guess it's surprise....It brings some meaning to the saying "It's nothing to sneeze at" They also sneeze when they're covered and I open the drawers of my dresser (their cage sits on top of it.)

i'm with rainbow on this the first thing i would check would be dust of the seed
