Posted November 9, 200519 yr i have a little girl budgie who is normally very active . noticed this evening she isnt her normal self ,very strange because she seemed fine this morning . maybe its because im watching her but she doesnt seem to be eating as much as normal and her breathing is very deep almost like she is struggling, she also has her beak slightly open ... my other budgie seems fine . they normally follow each other everywhere but atm she is sitting by herself very uninterested i think i will take her to the vets in the morning as this isnt normal for her. you think she possibly has a chest infection? November 10, 200519 yr Your budgie sounds quite sick, and a trip to the vet is certainly the right way to go. Please make sure it is an avian vet, normal vets don't understand birds at all, and make sure your vet is aware that she has been with another bird. Any illness can be easily transferred, so both birds will need to be treated. Please let us know how it goes
November 10, 200519 yr She might have a lipoma (benign fleshy tumor) pressing on her windpipe. Apparently this is quite common and I unfortunately have 2 budgies with the affliction but they can be treated with cheap people meds in their water. Ask your AVIAN vet.
November 10, 200519 yr Oh dear. What did the vet say? By the way, welcome to the forum. How long have you had your birds and what are their names? When you get a chance, tell us more about them.
November 10, 200519 yr unfortunatly i dont have any avian vets in my area , spent along time looking last night and it seems the nearest one is about 30miles away and i dont have transport so i will have to take her to a reputable local vet and just hope he knows what he is talking about My budgies names are Jasper and Amber havent had them long only about a month .. i really do hope she will be okay but she doesnt seem any worse this morning Edited November 10, 200519 yr by Bea
November 10, 200519 yr Nixxs, remind your vet that he can always ring and ask the avian vet for advice. Unfortuanately avian vets are few and far between, and a lot of people have to rely on normal vets being advised by phone. Please let us know how you go. And welcome too, I don't think I said before
November 10, 200519 yr well i couldnt get her booked in till 3:20 this afternoon so i hope she doesnt get any worse in the mean while ...will keep u posted its very worrying
November 10, 200519 yr okay been to see the vet and he seemed to know what he was doing.... given her some antibiotics to take for 7 days and i have to take her back if she gets any worse. i was a bit worried about her taking her medicine but as i type this she is drinking her water that has it in, so all looking good . now just have to wait i guess thank you all for your help and when she is all better i will take some photos
November 10, 200519 yr Sorry that you didn't find us under better circumstances, but glad you did. I hope that your little one will recover. Keep up posted.
November 10, 200519 yr Sorry that you didn't find us under better circumstances, but glad you did. I hope that your little one will recover. Keep up posted. oO i did find you a while ago actually i looked on here for inside info on budgies before i got them as i didnt want to go into it blind.
November 10, 200519 yr Hello Nixxs. Hope your little budgie gets better very soon.Try and keep him warm and don't forget that he may have passed onto your other one so that one might need medication too. Did the vet say anything about this?
November 10, 200519 yr i did take them both in so he was aware they are together and the medicine i am giving her i have to mix with water so he is getting it too (just incase)
November 11, 200519 yr Did he actually say what the problem was? I'm so pleased that you had a vet that is aware of birds and their needs
November 11, 200519 yr :ausb: Good to hear your girl is on antibiotics and her buddy is taking them as a prophylactic measure so he doesn't get a chest infection if that is the prob. get well soon guys!!
