Posted November 6, 200519 yr Alcohol Chocolate Avocado Apple seeds Are TOXIC to budgies and should NEVER be fed. Onion Asparagus Cabbage Aubergine (eggplant) Rhubarb (including leaves) Dairy products Raw potato Crisps (Chips) or other high salt human foods Human Breakfast cereals containing Zinc Strawberries (or any highly perishable fruit) unless 100% organic Should also be avoided as they may cause harm to your budgie. Some fruits and vegetables are sprayed and treated with high amounts of pesticides and should be avoided if possible. Organic produce is best to feed your budgies, and always remember to wash any fresh fruits or vegetables very thoroughly before feeding. * Dried fruit preserved with sulfites may not be the best choice for your bird. People sometimes have acute hypersensitivity reactions to sulfites, so an animal as small as a bird may have an even greater sensitivity to them. In many cases, we have to rely on guidelines we use for ourselves until someone discovers that the ingredient affects birds as well. check out our FAQ system for more information. January 20, 200619 yr Thanks for the info. I read somewhere that lettuce is also toxic. Is this true? I'm wanting to up the variety of fruits and vegetables my babies are eating. They really only go for grass/seeds (I grow myself so I know are safe), apples (without seeds ALWAYS), green grapes, and celery. I've tried carrot but they're not fans. Is banana usually a hit? Maybe blueberries and broccoli? It's just so hard becuase I want to make sure that what I give them is totally safe.

Try grating the carrot and mixing it with the celery. Snow pea sprouts and mung bean sprouts are good. If you can get endive it is very good. high in vitamins and minerals. Bannans and blueberries don't know. Broccoli is good.
February 23, 200619 yr Eucalyptus leaves are a highly beneficial thing to feed your budgies if you can get ahold of them. http://www.budgieworld.net/budgie_advice.htm Edited February 23, 200619 yr by karenfernvale

This type specifically http://www.odla.nu/artiklar/images/bilder/...benjamina_2.jpg Just today, Konrad decided she loves that tree, and I'm not sure if I should let her play and bite on it anymore Thanks Nharvi Edited May 3, 200718 yr by Nharvi

May 17, 200717 yr As for favourite foods, his is baby spinach leaves, and cooked white rice. I was actually wondering about the rice - does anyone else feed it to their birds? He goes ape over it. I was thinking it might be a good soft food for the breeding cages. I looked at my rice in the cupboard last night and thought of that, If someone could confirm cooked rice being okay?????
May 17, 200717 yr cooked rice is okay and can be digested easily, make sure you don't use salt when boiling, and rinse throughly and make sure the rice is not sticking together. Rice should not be given to breeding birds because parent can actually gorge their babies and in turn rice has no nutritional value and the babies can starve. I found this very interesting fact when reading about rice .
June 18, 200717 yr hey there , try some beetroot , not tinned they add juices to that but buy some fresh cut into peices and feed it , they love it .. beware!! if you are showing them they will get stained from the beetroot and that doesnt look good on the show bench.
June 18, 200717 yr Was reading through this topic and noticed that people are giving their budgies white rice. I would suggest a change to brown rice. Its not a huge difference but I believe it is a little better for them
July 4, 200717 yr thanks for the info i didnt realise apple seeds are a no no i just pick the apple of the tree and just cut it in half and put it into the avairies
June 7, 200816 yr Arrgh! I can't believe I was so careless! I was eating chocolate and Squee came over and ate a crumb! Just a little nibble, but I'm still so worried because I saw her chewing as I chased her off. I hope what has been said in this thread about it being okay in small doses is true
June 7, 200816 yr Elly where did you read about rice having no nutritional value? It is after all essentially a grass seed just like wheat, barley, etc. I would have thought it would be great
August 1, 200915 yr Is it alright for budgies to eat plain toast? And what about oats? Are they okay?
August 1, 200915 yr just make sure hannah that it is not becoming the staple of the diet, a treat is fine i would suggest brown bread as more nutritional value but white bread is fine too.
August 1, 200915 yr It's not, he just gets it sometimes when he out of the cage and someone is eating toast, etc. He still gets loads of greens + his seed

Its not a huge difference but I believe it is a little better for them I agree. I have also just begun to feed whole oats to the birds in the aviary instead of hulled oats. There is more nutritional value in whole oats.
April 28, 201114 yr how about plain frozen vegetables like corn, peas and green beans? Those are great. Just try not to overheat them if you thaw them in the microwave, cuz the more cooked they are, the more vitamins they lose.
