Lands sake, these are questions for Nerwen! The ones I can answer are

3. No, they have to be in perfect condition for judging

4. Well, I would, but probably if I was a serious breeder you'd have to say no, you need it to not be scared of the girls :P

5. Put them on a lower fat diet (choose seeds for this, not sunflower etc), feed more greens and fresh food, reduce amount of seed provided, allow more flight time, try to convert to pellets

8. I would think with a dislocated hip she would find mating too painful to accomplish. She can't be judged, because the hip would affect her stance

9. Needs to be in perfect condition for judging. Possibly these aren't this birds feathers, but have been placed in the cage to try and get a better score?

1 A novice breeder who has purchased three pairs, a Sky Blue cock and hen, a Light Green cock, and hen, a Cinnamon Cobalt and a Violet Opaline hen, asks you if he should pair them this way. What pairing would you suggest and why?

answer- interesting question, there are so many piarin for different reasons. ou could pair them that way to keep a blue like and green line strong, or mix the light greens with a sky blue partner and you then know you have greens spilt for blue, plus any blue babie that appear tell you that the at lest one parentis split already. The other two are hard, either way the opaline dissappears to become split in some males. The Cinnamon with the sky blue would look nice. blah not much of an answer. I would need to talk to this 'novice' to see what he was after in the babes.

2 You pair a Dominant Pied Dark Green with a Cobalt hen, what are the expected breeding results?

answer -50% Dominant Pied Dark greens /blue

50% normal dark greens/ blue

Of cuase these would be different if you knew the male was slpit blue already

3 Your best Grey Green hen loses both primary tail feathers during the week before the show. Would you show this bird at the show?

answer- as lin said it need to be in top condition for a show :P

4 One of your best cock birds was attacked by a hen. She removed half of the cere. After it healed you placed this cock with another hen in the breeding cage. He has nothing to do with the hen, always moving to the furthest corner. She laid clear eggs. Would you keep this cock?

answer- I would give him another go, giving him plenty of time alone with the hen to bond before adding the box. If he was still afraid of hens then retire him. Selling if I'm out of room.

5 On your inspection of the birds in your aviary, you notice that a few cocks and hens are fat. You remove them to a small wire cage and they put on more weight. You use a hopper as a seed container. Should you. change you method of

feeding? Are there other changes you can make in your husbandry?

answer- limit the amount of seed they can get a day and add fesh fruit and vegges, to the mix, umm make sure there aer interesting thing for them to play or chew on so they don't simply sit there waiting for food.

6 A pair, Sky Blue cock and a Sky Blue hen, with five chicks:- 1. Opaline Sky Blue hen. 2. Sky Blue cock. 3. Spangle Cobalt hen. 4. Cinnamon Opaline Sky Blue hen, 5. Light Green hen. Is this possible? What should you note in your records for this cock and hen?

answer- no it is not, the spangle cobalt hen and light green hen are either from another male, from not knowning the right father or fostering eggs. Spangle can only show up in babies if one of the parent are spangle it is not a recessive gene. Two blue birds to not have any genes to make the yellow need in a green bird. The records sould now state that the male is split for opaline.

7 When I started with Budgerigars, an experienced breeder asked if I liked coloured birds and I said yes. His reply was that I should buy a good Grey Green, split blue cock and mate it to a Violet hen. Why do you think he made this suggestion?

answer- to get nice coloured blues and violets. Not sure why a grey green instead of a normal green. I know adding a green can strengthen a line. adding- is it becuase you would have gotten some of both?

8 A Light Green hen has a dislocated hip, which cannot be put in a show but can she be used in the breeding cage? Why can't she be entered in a Show?

answer- she is not in top contition for a show, but I wouldn't breed her with a hip like that, if you have a dislocated hip would you like someone to stand on your shoulders??

9 The Judge is judging a class of Grey Green hens and notices a bird which has lost its dark blue primary tail feathers both of which are lying on the floor of the cage. The cage is placed second for most of the time while judging takes place. The Judge then asks the Steward to remove this hen as it's disqualified. Do you know why?

answer- you can't judge a bird with out tail feathers since some of the judging involes them??

10 What is the cheek patch colour of a Spangle Grey Green cock?

answer- blue, I think (Laughing out loud)

ohh that was fun :) have no idea about the show stuff so I'm guessing there

1 Yes the Novice breeder should use these pairs, because the two pairs of normal birds should produce normal young and if they don't you will learn what hidden features are within these birds. The third pair are both blue and sex-linked. All young cocks will all be normals split for Cinnamon and Opaline while the you hens will be Cinnamon blues.

2 Dominant Pied to Normal gives 50% Dominant Pied and 50% Normal Green to Blue give 100% Green split blue All chicks are green Both cock and hen carry one dark factor which means that 25% will Light Green 50% will be Dark Green and 25% Olive Green.

3 A Budgerigar without both primary tail feathers is not a complete bird and if, shown will be severely penalised.

4 The cock will probable never get over it You could try isolating him with a good quite hen over a long period then move them to a breeding cage.

5 Using a hopper is a convenient way to feed our birds, especially if our time is limited. However, it's not the best method for over-weight birds. Feeding them late afternoon by throwing seed on the floor is better. You regulate the amount of seed so that none remain to next afternoon. Your birds will be more active and not overweight. Remove items such as oats and groats from the seed mix.

6 A normal pair of budgerigars should produce all normals. Sky Blue to Sky Blue should all be Sky Blue. The Cobalt is not possible neither is the Light Green. Spangle is a dominant variety so is not possible from this mating. Opaline and Cinnamon are sexed linked varieties which can be carried hidden by the cock but not the hen. If the cock is split for Opaline and Cinnamon then all the chicks showing this feature will be hens

7 If the Grey Green cock split blue is a medium Grey green then every colour is possible. Light Green, Dark Green, Olive, Grey Green Light, Medium and Dark, Sky Blue, Cobalt, Mauve and all can also carry the violet modifier with the Cobalt carrying this factor will be visible Violet

8 Yes she can breed. Be careful of your selection of cock that it's not related. You may inbreed this fault. An injured or deformed bird is not a complete bird for the show bench.

9 If the bird had lost its tail feathers while benched the Judge may be lenient and not penalize the bird heavily. In this case the tail feathers in the show cage are from another bird. The tail feathers of a Grey Green are black.

10 Grey.

  • 2 weeks later...

Point 5. I would use a finch mix and add friut and vegatables. Make sure there is a vitamin and mineral suppliment for them.

  • 3 years later...
