Learning To Fly

I have had my budgie, Toby, for almost a week and he is about 6 weeks old. Today when i took him out of the cage he flew off my hand. this was a big step as i got him with his wings cliped and the guy told me that he didn't know how to fly yet. all afternoon he has been showing of to me by flying around his cage. The only promblem now is that he keeps wanting to fly off my hand when he is out (i supose that i can't blame him from want to test his wings).

Aww, he's discovering his wings and what wonderful things he can do with them! I love it when they fly, and you get to see your bird actiually being a bird!

Lisa, I have the same thing happening but with patience. I also think when you first open the door that is the first thing they want to do is stretch their wings like kids running into a big open field if given the opportunity.

If you have a room that is smaller take him into it so he can't fly so far :P. And talk to him, you can even have a treat when he is perching on your finger too. With this one, I am sure there will be more expert advice it is patience. Pretty will now sit on my finger out of the cage but when he sees his cage he always flys back to it but yesterday we had some progress and he sat there even when he saw his cage for a minute. It was progress :(

Lisa the same thing happened to me with this last lot of 4 babies. I took them from Mum at 6 weeks (She is on other eggs:nest: ) and placed them in my nursery cage.

Well one got out under my hand and had a good fly around our dining room, which is now my bird room (timber paneled walls) so I decided I'd let the others have a fly. Well after the fist lap of the room they all sat on top of the panelling where it does not quite reach the ceiling (bad workmanship) had a breather then another fly but they were happy for me to hold up a long perch for them to sit on then I just fed it through the cage door and they went to their perches.:ygbudgie

But they had a good exercise session.

This lot are no keen on being handled, but I am perservering with them
