November 17, 200519 yr Congrats on your newest additions, and I am so glad they are now in a loving home. Would love to see pictures of them when you have a chance.
November 17, 200519 yr Yep, they were disgusting, and for the cage to carry them home in I was charged $10. I like being creative for my birds. The cage looks awfully bare now, but I'll try to get a better picture of the two. I think my boy is sick...
November 18, 200519 yr The boy died, and now the girl is sitting on the bottom of the cage hardly moving. I called the guy who sold them to me, he says they panicked because of the noise of the train, and he won't replace them. Funny thing is, I took my budgies for birdy sitting on the train, all 6 of them were perfectly happy. The cage then was bigger and more open, none of them freaked. Their journey was 2hrs, each way, the new birds have 1 hour... What's wrong with the girl and how can i fix it? $35 for a pair of birds that didn't even last 24 hours, what a rip off!
November 18, 200519 yr Caren, the sad truth is, that whatever was wrong with the little boy is probably what is wrong with the female. Please race her to an avian vet. Did you quarantine? Including washing your hands between your established birds and your new ones? If not, then it is extremely important that you seek vetinary assistance. Even with quarantine, a lot of us don't have the space to adequately quarantine, so let the vet know you have more birds in the same house. Good luck, please let us know what is going on. After you find out what is wrong, maybe you can report him to the RSPCA?
November 18, 200519 yr Yes, she's quarantined. She's in a cage in the bathroom at the moment, with that snakey thing at the bottom of the door to stop drafts, and the window open. I do the same for rats I have to quarantine too, never had a problem. My birds are brought into the living room for cold nights, but for warm and humid nights, they sleep on the porch because there's more air to circulate out there.
November 18, 200519 yr Caren, what a sad experience. I'd bet they were sick from the unsanitary conditions they were kept in. I think I would have brought them home too, just to get them away. Not a good reason to buy birds, I know, but I would have done the same thing. Please keep us posted on what the vet says. That poor hen needs to be seen right away. And let the vet know the conditions you rescued her from, and that her mate has already died. So sad.
November 18, 200519 yr I took her to my rat vet (who I'd trust to the ends of the earth) He said she was poisoned with something, but she's past the worst of it. He injected her with something, and told me to bring her back if I noticed she's getting worse. She's a beautiful girl. I'm so happy she's so strong.
November 19, 200519 yr Good Caren, I would love to see pics of her when you have the chance :bluebudgie:
November 20, 200519 yr I finally understand my new cam (anything's better then swearing at it every 10 seconds) http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b95/cazza03/bluegirl.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b95/cazza03/bluegirl1.jpg These are my brave girl. I'll get pics of the others tomorrow.
November 20, 200519 yr Poisoned...my god that's horrible. So glad she is in good shape to make it though. I can't see the picture's either. :hap:
November 20, 200519 yr Sorry, bad url. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b95/cazz...es/bluegirl.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b95/cazz...s/bluegirl1.jpg I have made my account public, it's on the internet!
November 24, 200519 yr It's always very sad when people just don't bother to take care of these great little birds. Cleaning cages and changing food and water are not difficult.. I don't know how someone can live with themself after neglecting animals like that. I'm glad to hear that the female is doing better and am very sorry that the male didn't make it.
November 28, 200519 yr The guy called me and offered to replace him with a bird of my choice. I went back yesterday. He'd decided to have his aviary face the side of his house along the fence. Too dark and too boring for my liking. He hadn't cleaned it for 2 months or thereabouts because of the birdy **** piles. He hadn't cleaned the water bowls and food dish for that long either, and when I asked about it, he told me to shut up. I offered to clean the cage (not for him, for the poor depressed birds) he waved his hand at me and walked away. I spent most of the afternoon putting bird **** in the recycle bin, washing feed and water bowls, rinsing the cage, and weed picking. His 10 birds fell over themselves for the clean food and water, and they were in heaven for the well-washed weeds. He was sat in his trailer with a cup of coffee when i finally called it quits and noticed him. He told me that the cage'd now sell for much more, that I'd done a good job. He offered to give me all his budgies, cos I have nowhere to put them, and most of them were skin and bones and a train trip wouldn't have been a nice thing for them. He got angry at that point and told me to p-off or he'd get the police there for trespassing. Now I feel incredibly guilty. Why didn't I take the birds? I've left them with a guy who obviously didn't care...

I've left them with a guy who obviously didn't care... That was very nice of you to clean-up. What an ungrateful person he is!! Don't feel guilty, it definently isn't your responsibility to care for his birds, and a long train trip might just have killed them. If you don't have the room or time it probably wouldn't be best either, even though you would've cared for them better then he does. Maybe try reporting him to the RSPCA? December 4, 200519 yr I have 3 new birds! 2 skyblue (a boy and a very young girl) and a cobalt. He rings all his birds so he can keep a record of what family each bird belongs to. Because he's not ringing them for show purposes, he makes his own open rings and bends them around each bird's leg. He prefers open rings because if the bird gets an infection under the ring, he can take the ring off and fix the problem then put the id back on, which is a brilliant idea. This guy's been breeding budgies for 30 years he says, and I believe him. The 3 I bought from him are beautiful, I fell in love with them instantly. They're easily 1/3 bigger then the birds I've got from other places, and he obviously loves them to bits. I'm getting a new BIG cage soon, and I'm considering seperating my boys from my girls until breeding time. What do you guys think?
