I Noticed Today That My Male Budgie Was Really Attached To My Female. He Chased Her Around The Cage, Locked Beaks With Her Quite Often To Feed Her And In The End He Tried To Get Onto Her Back As If He Was Mating And She Freaked. She Sqaurked Like Mad And Clung To The Side Of The Cage So I Decided To Give Her A Break And Move Her Into Another Cage I Have. I Also Moved Her As I Don't Want Them Mating As They Aren't Old Enough Yet And I Don't Believe I Know Enough To Handle It Well. The Things I Want To Know Are

1 - Why Was He Constantly Pestering Her ?

2 - Why Did She React Badly, They Have Definitely Bonded.

3 - Was I Right To Seperate Them ?

4 - When Shall I Put Them Back Together ?

Thanks Amanda x

1 - Why Was He Constantly Pestering Her ?

I would think because he is wanting to move tot he nest step which is mating.

2 - Why Did She React Badly, They Have Definitely Bonded.

Could be many reasons, she wasn't ready, he didn't do the courtship dance, sing, feeding correctly. Or in his attempts to mount he hurt her.

3 - Was I Right To Seperate Them ?

If she was getting stressed then yes, they can start to bond again later after he has calmed down.

4 - When Shall I Put Them Back Together ?

When you feel it is alright to try it. Make sure you have at least a few hours to stay home after they have been rejoined, to keep an eye one them.

How old are they? Will you be having to break the bond for another 6 months for more or only a couple? If they are really young it might be an idea to leave them in separate cages until older.

Hi Nerwen, Many Thanks For Your Detailed And Interesting Post. I Have Just Put Them Back In The Same Cage And They Are With Me In My Room, They Both Jumped On The Same Perch And The Male Immediately Began Preening The Female And She Responded By Preening Him Back And They Were Chirping Happily :( In Response To Your Question :

They Are Around The 8month Mark So If I Have To Seperate Them They'd Only Be Apart For About 8 Weeks, Is That okay Or Would It Stress Them Out Being Apart For So Long ?

Thanks Again Nerwen x

now that's okay, seperating them will break the bond a bit, so if the male gets a bit restless again just break them up like you did.

okay, thanks nerwen. i've been with them for a couple of hours now and he's not once chased her or tried to mount her, they are sat next to one another fast asleep so i'm pleased about that. fingers crossed all goes well, will update you tomorrow ! thanks again nerwen x

hi. there's been no problems today, shelby has been her usual bossy self; ordering ty to move off HER millet ! they have sat together all day occaisionally playing together but mainly just sat quietly. thanks again for your help x
