Young Budgie

Posting for my friend again, who just got her budgie today :D (if you want a photo go to budgie pictures and look at Toby:)) He is only 5 weeks old, and only in the last 2 or 3 days has began eating a bit of seed. Is there anything you would recommend she feeds him as he hasn't been eating (even though she's only had him for 12 hours).

He's probably a bit scared but at 5 weeks i would be offering wet egg and bisciut mix (you can get that from pet shops) and millet on the floor of the cage. Now would also the time to introduce veggies so some grated apple and/or carrot as well as things like brocolli and spinach would be good. I would also put a shallow dish of seed on the floor of the cage because i know that when Blinkie was that age he spent a lot of time running around the floor instead of sitting on perches. :D

Ive seen Toby-he's gorgeous! It's perfectly normal for a new frightened budgie to take a while to eat but you say he is eating some seed so that's actually really good! If he had eaten nothing at all I would suggest millet but he may not need it.

Oh-and this is just the right time to put things like cress and broccolli etc into the cage(just tiny bits-nothing bigger than he is!.

Just to let her know - the next stage is where he will madly try to get out to the cage - he will try everywhere and everything. It's quite funny, but can be scary if you don't know to expect it :D

(Laughing out loud) thanks for the warning, i'll pass it on

You're gonna have to put pegs on the doors to hold them shut! Mango's learnt that if she picks up the door and slides it up then lets go, and keeps doing it for 10mins, I get up to peg the door shut.

It's wierd, she hasn't worked out that she can hold the door open, get out and fly away!!

I learned this the hard way when Pixel got her neck trapped under that type of door. One of the most horrifying experiences *ever* and Pixel had never messed with the cage doors before that (while I was around at least). It was awful, I thought for sure her neck was broken but thankfully she recovered.
