My Budgies Cage, And Some Questions.

Hey everyone,

I have a relatively large budgie cage that I originally got for a crow, for free, from a friend. It had a divider in it, but I removed it. After the crow was adopted, my rats lived in there for awhile. Then, the birds.

Here's how I have it set up right now:

There's a new perch not seen in this picture, that I just put in by that wierd crossbar swing.

(in this one, pretend that there is a perch right by the opening of the door, as I just installed one.

All in all, the cage is 64" wide, 29" tall, and 24" deep. Since I've placed their essentials at various places around the cage, including down low, they use all of their perches and ladders. They don't just stay at the top. I have 2 perches that are about 2 feet long, a ladder, two swings, a 1.5 foot perch, a platform, a 1 foot perch, and three .5 foot ones that attach to only one side of the cage and stick out. Did that make sense? :P

I had just finished putting this cage back together after cleaning it, but there is USUALLY a play place that I made covering the whole top (on the roof) that they play on daily.

What I'm wondering is how many birds can live in that cage?

I rescue animals, and if I have the room, I wouldn't mind opening my doors to a few more budgies now that I have a large cage. (I would quarantine, don't worry!) I would *Like* to put in as many as possible, because I know of quite a few budgies, especially a few in a zoo in threehills, that are in horribley neglectful situations. I can add more perches if nessacary, and remember that they can come out for hours a day to fly around and play on top! But also keep in mind that I don't want to crowd them.

What would you suggest?

:hap: (<--I love that!)

Wow, what a massivecage! I was pretty rapt to just buy a cage 32 inches wide! :hap: I have no idea how many birds it will hold, I know for one the minimum is 18x18x18. Someone will let you know soon!

I have been looking at a cage that is about 64" long to put all 10 of mine in. I think it depends in part on how you install perches, toys, and such. You have tons in yours - lucky birdies!! The more toys you put in, the fewer birds as they will not have as much fly room. Yours is a wonderful cage, but are you sure it is that long? 64" is over 5 feet, and it doesn't look that long in the picture. In your first picture you have two birds in it already with plenty of room, but I can't imagine 8 more in there...but you could put at least another pair in there, maybe 2. :P Maybe I need to re-think the size of my next cage.... :hap:

I wish my camera would work! I've got 3 in my cage, and I think they've got heaps of room! I'll try and post a picture tomorrow, my other camera works, but I've 'misplaced' the cable!

Ack, sorry, I don't know what I was thinking! It's 48" long! :(

you could keep 1 or 2 more budgies in there comfortably :(

Hi! Am glad I've seen this post - it looks like a cage that was originally intended for small animals - rats / chinchillas etc. Looks great now you've 'converted' it! :)

Am hoping to 'convert' a chinchilla cage that is now redundant (was a rat cage) for my budgies. They're currently in a Ferplast Medium Brio, but the 'chin cage is wider (it's 100cm wide, 100cm tall and 55cm front-to-back) and has bars on the roof which will make hanging swings / toys etc easier. So am pleased someone else has done something like this!

Hmmm, that will mean I have rats in a bird cage and budgies in the rats old cage....... :( Well, it works for me anyway.

Nice cage!

Actually, it was built by a friend for their budgies and cockatiels. It was divided in half, two cockatiels on one side and SIX :) budgies on the other. Are you sure I can't fit more then four in there? There are four birds that need rescuing in Three Hills, I wouldn't mind taking the whole lot. Their door is always open when I'm home, and they're allowed free flight around the basement and have perches and toys on top as well. I don't want to crowd them, but I wouldn't totally mind if it was slightly less then ideal. They're at a Zoo in Threehills that has been dubbed THE worst zoo in Canada. I've been there three times...the budgies are in a tiny little cage with lovebirds, cockatiels, and conures. They have ONE perch, and the cage is infested with flys. There is about a 2 inch thick layer of waste and seeds at the bottom, and if you move some of it, the bottom layer is swarming with maggots. They throw the seed right onto the cage floor, they have no toys, and when I was there, no water. They need out of there!

:( That zoo sounds awful!! No wonder you want to take them out of there!! I really don't know about how many you could put in your cage 'comfortably', I'm afraid. I'm sure someone will be able to advise you better. It's difficult to know what to do for the best in such circumstances.

Sorry - I just thought it looked more like a small animal cage - am being too presumptious, as usual.

Hope you find some sort of solution anyway.

If they get plenty of time out of the cage, then that makes a big difference. And you can't leave those poor birds there in those conditions. Go get them, just remember at least one month's quarantine, just in case of any diseases. And post pictures, lot of them!

I think that with lots of time out of the cage and maybe if you arranged the cage so that fewer things are hanging down so they can fly about more then 6 would fit. Those poor budgies at that zoo, i really hope you can get them out of there.

6 should be fine, like Bea said maybe rearrange the toys a little differently. Just arrange some perches so that each bird can have a different section of the cage to himself if they need space. :) Here's a picture of one of my cages. They are 24" x 18" x 34" and has 5 birds in each. You can see they can all get away from each other and have their own space if they want it. Yours is longer but not as tall. I think if you arranged it right they would be fine.

Alrighty, I actually did some rearranging last night so now they have a lot more room. The only thing, my female can't fly so I usually don't take flying room into consideration...if I have things spaced far apart, she's always falling to the floor. Oh well, I'll just buy a long ladder leading from the floor to her favorite perch to make thingseasier :D I won't be able to get the birds for another month or two...it'll take some planning. That zoo isn't a huge fan of me anymore.....

Keep working on it TheSprintys. I'm not surprised your not their favourite person :D But those budgies need someone like you

If your birds are full feathered and allowed to fly then the MINIMUM dimension on the smallest dimension of the cage should be 24" (600cm - give or take).

Large open diagonals clear of toys or furniture to fly across after that.
