Just took Sky out for some fly time and I had dad prepare

a nest box for when sky is ready

and sky has been going in & out, in & out, PLUS Chewing at the outside of the Nest boxes hole!

I can almost see a SMIRK on Stimpy's face!

HELP WANTED

thanks

Stimpy

Budgies don't get "pregnant." She's most likely inspecting the box but unless they've mated she's unlikely to lay eggs.

What happened to waiting until they were old enough? ^_^

I went back to take a look at previous posts so I could get a better idea of where you stand with this breeding thing.

You said in a more recent post that you had unrelated birds but in a prior post you said that you got them from the same store so can't be sure whether or not they're related. They're about the same age and from the same store, it's quite likely that they are clutch mates or that their parents were.

They're quite young still, too young to be bred yet but you've added a nest box anyway. Why?

Put your birds before yourself, please. I know breeding looks fun and I'm sure it IS a rewarding experience. I want to breed as well but I also want to do it right.

Please wait until you're more educated and able to start off on the right foot. The rewards of breeding aren't worth putting your budgies and/or their babies at risk.

the box was sitting on the floor waiting to be used when they were ready to breed :)

Ah okay. Have you removed it?

Take the box out! Aren't they only a few months old??? She doesn't need time to get used to the box, and if you leave it in there is a good possiblilty they will use it before they are physically and emotionally ready. Once Sky is old enough you can add the box and nature will take it's course. She hasn't built up any stores of vitamins, minerals (esp. calcium) or strength yet. A few months in young birds isn't enough time for a true pair bond to form...if they are under 6 months when they feed each other it is not the feeding of pairs, it is babies still feeding babies. They all do that when they are young, it is a normal part of the maturation process. Babies will feed their siblings in the nest box before they can eat seed, and then turn around and beg food from their parents. If you breed them now in all likelihood they will ignore the eggs, ignore the babies, and/or ignore each other. In my opinion, they are pretending at parenthood at this age. It's just practice when they are young. Even though you may see signs of them feeding and trying to mate, it is like toddlers playing dress-up...it's practice. At 4 or 5 months of age, they are still growing up. Egg binding is a possibility too, as Sky's bones are not yet hardened all the way, and she may have more problems in the process of creating and laying an egg since her body is not ready for it. If I were you, I'd wait a year.

Budgies will breed when conditions are good, not necessarily when they are physically and emotionally ready. So if you provide a nest box and good food and water they think "there's lots of food, water, nesting area...better breed while conditions are good." They aren't going to think they're too young and not breed, that's your job. You shouldn't provide them with the nesting box until they are actually ready, they can't make that decision. :D Please take the nesting box out.
