Posted October 16, 200519 yr I've checked Gypsy's baby a couple of times today, and whilst it has food in the crop, it doesn't seem to be a great deal of food. Scruffy is not feeding Gypsy, and she doesn't come out too often for a feed. Just outside of the box I have put dry egg & biscuit mix, and wet egg & biscuit mix. Is there anything else I can do to help her? I tried to take the baby out to feed it, and she attacked me viciously. I think it will be alright, I just would like to see her feed it a bit more. Anything I can do to make it easier for her? Of course she has seed, plenty of fresh food and millet in the cage too!
October 16, 200519 yr Try pinning some millet or a seed stick (something with food or seed) right by the enterance of the nestbox hole, maybe that would help.
October 16, 200519 yr I think that if she doesn't start feeding it more soon you should go ahead and take it out for occasional feedings anyway. I'm not a breeder so you might want to wait for advice from one of them but as long as the hen isn't actually rejecting the chick I think you providing a few feedings to help her out might be a good idea. Just where gloves when going in?
October 16, 200519 yr I think so too Terri! I hate to do it, but I want the baby to have the best, and Gypsy obviously needs a bit of help. As soon as I've got the kids off to school I wil feed it and pop it back in. Any other advice welcomed! ................................................................................ .......................................... Well, when I went to feed the baby, it's crop was twice as full, so I have left it for now. I would really rather the mother do it herself, but I will be checking throughout the day, although I know this upsets the mother. It's a hard balancing act between checking enough and overchecking! (Laughing out loud) Scruffy has been trying to feed Gypsy, but she won't take the food off of him. I'm hoping that in a day or so they start to understand what their meant to be doing a bit better!
October 17, 200519 yr Aw, maybe she's getting her second wind. Hope it works out and you don't have to do anything!
October 17, 200519 yr Oh I hope so! I had to move her out of the way so I could see the baby, and she made me bleed! ouch! I really don't want to have to face nasty old Gypsy again! (Laughing out loud) Shes' sooooo mean and I adore her sooooo much
October 17, 200519 yr Ouch! Tell her that maybe if she'd do her job you wouldn't be forced to invade her space so often!
October 17, 200519 yr tee hee! I'm too scared to tell her that! You have no idea how nasty she is! Mind you, she had been really mistreated before I got her, so I can't blame her. She is a lot better towards me than she was!
October 17, 200519 yr No pictures at the moment, but babies happening all over the place. I have had the first 6 fledge now, although the baby of that lot really did not want to grow up. Kept running home to Mummy (Laughing out loud). The other hen has 2 babies, I think 6 days and 4 days, with another due to hatch tomorrow (I stole one egg off of her for Gypsy, which has hatched). It's quite fun this budgie breeding, far more interesting than finches! But I have to stop after this lot! (Laughing out loud)
October 17, 200519 yr I love that name for a budgie - Gypsy. I hope that she and Scruffy will be able to work it out. I thought my bird could be a bit tempermental.. but she's never made me bleed and really doesn't hurt if she bites (which she seems to be getting out of). Poor you but I'm sure all those adorable babies must be worth it.
October 17, 200519 yr Oh yes, it's all worth it. I must be crazy because my favourite budgies always have lots of attitude! She's calmed down heaps since I got her, but she loves her baby!
October 17, 200519 yr The finger's fine! I think the air is still blue with my language though She just happened to catch my finger right next to the nail, little cow! Yep, this is Gypsy's first baby, although it's not her egg! (Oh no! Eggnapped!) She seems to be doing a bit better, although not as well as Gherkin does with his! (Laughing out loud). I'm keeping an eye on them, I don't really want to feed the baby, though I will if I have to.

I know what you mean. The air was blue here the other night when I caught George by surprise and he put his top beak into the side of my nose.....drew blood the little $%$#@#....umm sorry Still hurts. Gypsy certainly is determined to do the best by the little one. I think your wise to let her try to raise the chick. Especially with you supervising.

Piper tried to take a chunk out of my ear the other day and last week Phoenix was determined to eat my face. They're rebelling! (Well, Phoenix was hormonal and Piper swears she was only trying to preen me...)
