Posted October 11, 200519 yr i don't put rings on my budgies they are only going to be pets. its just that i have lost 2 budgies now because the ring rubed to much on the leg it got infected and i did not see it as it was under the ring. and i don't feel comfortable putting a ring on a baby bird as i am scared i will hurt it Sarah
October 11, 200519 yr I don't use rings either, and I breed finches. The main purpose of rings, for the hobby breeder, is to enable you to know the relationships between birds, and not interbreed. If you have a surefire way of doing this without rings, then I don't have a problem with it.
October 11, 200519 yr A lot of breeders don't use rings, i think if you have no troubles remembering all your birds parents and stuff then there's no need for rings...especially if you're not going to show them.
October 11, 200519 yr Thanks that makes me feel a lot better. i keep records of the birds i have bred in a excel spread sheet Sarah
October 12, 200519 yr i don't use rings either but what i am going to do is i am only keeping babies that are hens and selling the cocks so that i don't have any chances of my birds interbreeding and then it gives me a chance to still go baby shopping
October 12, 200519 yr see i need more males than females as the girls out number the guys and some of them are to old to breed now Sarah
October 13, 200519 yr i am the opposite to you most of my birds are males and i was hoping when they had babies i would get some females but it's not turning out that way
October 13, 200519 yr Just for interest, does anyone know if the temperature the eggs are incubated at has any bearing on the sex of the bird? I know it does with crocodiles, and with chickens I think it is the humidity that decides the sex, and I'm sure it does with other eggs. Just was interested.
October 13, 200519 yr I'm not sure but in all the batches i've had the first baby has been a boy and there's been 1 girl in each batch. Just some odd facts i think.
October 22, 200519 yr I'll use rings. I'll keep records on my comp, but the rings are a backup. If I have a budgie with a problem, I'll remove it. I don't think budgies with problems are all that common, are they?
