Up To Six Eggs Now

Bobette has 6 eggs now.

She sits on them...She's in the regular nest

Bobby sometimes visits her, but she screams after him whenever he's in the nest... After 5 minutes, i feel like him going to "the bar" so we can have peace again

I give her the millet, once again... And the nest is right outside the food bowl and the water so she can have a quick access

In the morning, she gets out of the nest and start dancing around Bobby. Than they mate, and she goes to lay an egg ( i guess 0 i that how it works?)

This morning, i found the today's eggs in front of the nest box... Why does she lay eggs outside? She can't retain it for a couple of minutes???

Is that normal behaviour?

6 eggs, wow! She might lay another one, but I doubt it. So did you mean # 7 was laid outside the box? On the ground? Was it broken or did you put it in the box for her? I'm not sure why she would have laid an egg outside the box if all the other ones were laid inside. Maybe she laid it inside and felt something was wrong with it and so kicked it out??

It's possible she screams at Bobby when he's in the nestbox because he is trying to mate with her in there. I think if she didn't want him in there at all to feed her she wouldn't let him get more than his head inside the hole without chasing him out. Rainbow would mate whenever Skittles left the box, but morning time is more usual. She isn't laying eggs every morning is she? The fact that they are mating in the morning doesn't affect when she lays her eggs - she may lay in the morning, but could just as easily being laying her eggs at night. The two acts aren't necessarily related in that way.

When is the first egg due to hatch? (This is SO exciting.)

Wll i am not sure...

Yesterday i checked and there seemed to be 6 eggs in there. It is a box nest, with the entrance at 3 inches.

This morning, when i went for the usual cleaning up, changing water and seed hull chase, i saw that there was one egg on the top the aviary. i put it with the other. I thought it would be the 7th. But there was 5 in there.

Either i counted wrong yesterday, and today is the sixth (the first should hatch in 10-14 days)...

Or she pushed one egg out or the nest, pushing it 3in out of the hole, and it fell on top of the aviary without a scratch (doubtful??)

The conforting thing? There is a glass window to this nest box...

My worry : is the nest box hot enough once the babies hatch?

The last one was in the ceilling in the middle of summer. It was really hot.

Now the conditions are excellent (clean box, good food and water readily available, mate present).

But is is fall and now so hot down here anymore - i put the heat a bit, it is now 24C at the nest level. This morning it was 18-20. It isn't hot enough, is it?

I'm used to Fahrenheit, so I'm not sure what 18-20 C is, but the hen should be able to keep the babies warm enough. When Skittles had babies, the first clutch of eggs were laid in January/February and the inside of the house probably averaged 65-70 F. How warm is 18 C?

18 c = 64.4

my breeding season is in winter and my heating comes on at 10 c so 18 is fine

Natouk, the Mum will lay on or off the eggs depending on the temperature, so don't worry too much about that. She ensures they are kept at the right temperature, and she is an experienced Mum now. Good luck, lots of updates please!

Is she really a large hen enough to be able to cover 6 eggs?

She gets really fluffy and opens her wings... And then she has to equilibrate her weight so that she keeps all of the eggs in pefect positions.

It looks so tiring.

She looks tired

I wish i could help her by heating the nest so her job is not so hard anymore...

Yes, she'll be fine. You'll hear her moving the eggs around and turning them, so they'll be fine. If she can't do it by herself dad will go in and help

I'm very worried about this little one... I just don't want anything to go wrong this time...

Last time was bad enough...

sorry guys

it is really seven EGGS!!!!!

that's a lots of eggs....

One of my female is sitting on 5 eggs right now. She has stop laying for a while and if the eggs are fertilize, it should hatch this coming week or so. I've checked the budgies breeding chart.

I often checked the nest and the female would put an egg on a side, however, it is warm. She must have turning and taking turn to sit on the eggs.

Some females lay up to 9 eggs but 4-5 eggs are more common. Yeap, 7 are a lot of eggs.

yep she can have up to nine, but since this is your only pair I hope not all will hatch because seven is a lot of mouths to feed. Have you got everything ready in case you have to help out and handfeed some or all of them? Feeding formula and implements?

I really doubt (crossing fingers) they will all hatch.

However, i have already had to handfeedbaby cockatiels : i still have the seringes, i can stop at any point to the store for feeding formula. I still have the tank in which i keep the babies and can build an incubator in 2 hours.

It is not my oinly pair - i've just acquired another two males (apparently - i wished for a couple but they turn out to be males.) I have a very large (humongous) cage coming up coz i had already decided to constitute a flock of budgies.

I thinks she keeps laying eggs cause she keepts laying them outside of the nest (one on the finches aviary, one on the budgie cage, one un the food tray) - the others were laid in the nest. As i collect them, i put them in the nest. I have seen the pair mate many times lately. So they must be fertile.

she's got a lots of eggs now!! With a bit of luck, some of them will turn out to be females for the newcomers...

Skittles laid 7 eggs her first time too - 5 hatched. Believe it or not, they can flatten themselves enough to cover them all. :)

Looking at your setup, I think she could have pushed an egg outside the box and it wouldn't have broken. :) How are the birds doing today?

i just had a hen lay 8 eggs and she could fit all under her and she is really small

Sarah

I have 1 sitting on 7 eggs and 1 sitting on 8 and I hope she has stopped. The 1 with 7 has.

Good luck with your eggs and keep us up dated..

Well i came in the office this morning, anf Bobby and Bobette were mating, again...

I guess i'll come home to an 8th egg later...

I't getting hilarious

Shouldn't they stop mating once they got the reasonable amount of eggs? Or maybe she feels they werent' fertilized and that's why they keep going at it?

What to i do if i get 10 or 11? Is it a record? Do we get a prize??? :P:D:o

(last time she had only 4-5 eggs, and only one hatched, you know - but it was her first nest)

:P:D:o

She's probably just making sure she's a Mummy this time! She will really need a rest after this though!
