Posted October 1, 200519 yr okay, my babies are all are ranging between 4 and 5 weeks. 3 have been out for a day or two (at 3 weeks and 2 days), one had a little fly around the nursery aviary, but other than that they have not come out. Normally mine are all over the breeding cage by this age. Do I just let them stay in, or should I put them on the floor. Just worried that they won't learn to crack seed until they are about 6 weeks at this rate. Also Blondie is laying again, with her three babies still in the box. Will I remove the eggs? Cindy
October 1, 200519 yr Leave everything as it is. Mum & dad budgie will still look after the babies even when mum incubates the eggs. The babies obviously just don't feel ready yet to leave. They will soon enough don't worry. 5-6 weeks is average for babies to learn to feed themselves.
October 1, 200519 yr Yep, the parent's will probally enitce them out of the box when they feel that they are ready to come out or they have been in there too long. As with her laying again, do you want more babies? If not there are way's that you can prevent them from hatching

As I already have 11 babies and 6 baby quails, I dont feel like want anymore just yet. Never to old to learn something new or different. Cindy
October 2, 200519 yr You can shake the eggs, or pop them in the freezer for a bit (basically ruin the inside). You can also buy fake eggs and just replace the eggs with those.
October 2, 200519 yr I'd also keep an eye on the chicks just incase the parent do get a bit rough when they think it's time for the chick to go.
October 2, 200519 yr As for the eggs, the best thing to do is put them in the FRIDGE for about 20 minutes each. Do it one by one so the hen doesnt get too stressed if all of her eggs suddenly disappear. Shaking the eggs doesnt always work. I have found that even after shaking them up, they can still start developing (not normally though). If you put them in the freezer, there is a chance that they could freeze completely and then crack. Boiling them could work but it is a risky thing. If you decide to boil them, boil the water first and let it sit for about 5 minutes then carefully lower the eggs in with a spoon. They can easily crack if put in boiling water since they are pretty fragile.

I've been there before, and I have a nursery cage ready and standing by. Also have the hand rearing formula sitting on the kitchen bench. I'm that prepared my hubby thinks I'm paranoid Cindy Thanks for all the info about the eggs. OOH Number one, or "Alpha" has been out all day today and even hopped on my finger to eat some Malaleuca leaves I was feeding mum and Dad. It is a cheeky little thing, after getting a taste of the leaves, She would not let Mum or dad take any, she just kept snapping at them it was so funny to see Baby standing up to the parent. Cindy
