Posted September 24, 200519 yr got a male budgie for almost a year now. yet he doesnt have a partner. my female lutino is still young (not yet crusted cere). Do you suggest that I get a matured female for him? i'm sure he wanted to mate coz sometimes he's trying to mate the female but she doesnt want it yet and i always saw them biting each other.
September 24, 200519 yr Most animals want to mate, whether or not you allow them depends on if you're prepared to handle the possibility. Do you have the space, time, money, etc. to care for babies? Do you have an avian vet and have your birds been tested and found healthy? While we do our best to keep our birds happy, it's not always about giving them everything they want. Just like a small child, a budgie can't always know what is best as he is acting purely on instinct.

Well, first, you should know that a crusty brown cere indicates that the female is currently in breeding condition- not sexually mature. Budgies become sexually mature at 3-4 months of age. However, most people dont recomend you start breeding until about 12 months. How long have you had your female? She might be young, but its very well possible that shes just not in breeding condition at the moment. Almost all budgies develop an iris ring when they reach about 12 months. If she has an iris ring, shes obviously old enough to breed. Some mutations dont develop iris rings, however. I believe its normal for the male and female to act like that, of course unless they are actually hurting eachother. I would wait. The female isn't going to want to mate right away, and the male is still trying to impress her. Females, as ive read, may seem nasty during the whole mating process. :(Laughing out loud):
September 28, 200519 yr the female is almost 8 months now. i'm just a bit worried on the male side if he's getting bored hmm... you know!!! so i was just thinking if maybe he'll be better with a different partner. what do you think? September 28, 200519 yr If you want to breed then you should wait until your female is over a year old and in breeding condition. A lot of budgies go their whole lives without breeding so it's not a necessity in their lives. Please watch text shortcuts
September 28, 200519 yr Almost all budgies develop an iris ring when they reach about 12 months. Iris rings come in much earilier than that, and it's a way to judge the age of a bird as ready to breed. All of mine got their rings by the time their first molt was over.
September 28, 200519 yr 4 months isn't really that long for your male to wait. Budgies won't breed unless they are happy with their surroundings. If there isn't suitable breed boxes and food and light they will not breed.
October 1, 200519 yr guess, i have to stick to them. i saw them once the male step on the female but it was a quick one. does it mean it was a succesful mate? or not?

It would be less risky if you didn't at least. During mating, the male will be completely on top of the female and wrap a wing around to help keep balance. It would be unmistakable. If it happens and you're there to see, you'll know what's up.
