Posted September 19, 200519 yr Hi all Firstly, I am going to phone the vet and take her in if need be, but thought some of you here might have some advice in the meantime. Kylie's eye is looking sore. She is moulting and has been preening/scratching a lot. I'm not sure if she's just rubbed her eye too much or has caught it with a claw when scratching. She is her usual self, playing and chirping away, but I'd rather get something done before it gets infected or gets worse. What do you suggest? Should I try bathing it, and in what? I really don't want to make it any worse or scare her too much unnecessarily. Thanks for your help - I will let you know what the vet says Tracey
September 19, 200519 yr warm water with the teenyest bit of salt perhaps?? or just plain warm water. I'd use paper towel as its not likely to stick to the eye, just a tiny little dab.
September 19, 200519 yr what is the actually problem? is the eye swollen, is the scratch on the eye or the skin around it?
September 19, 200519 yr One time Buzz had a scratch on her eye so we took her to the vet and it turned out she had sinusitis and had scratched because it was irritating her.
September 19, 200519 yr Hi all the receptionist at the vet says to take her in, hopefully its nothing too bad. Tried to take a photo but didn't turn out very well. I've had a better look and its not the eye thats the problem. its the skin around the eye, which she has been rubbing away at with her swing or whatever she can get access to. There are no signs of scratches or open sores, so something must be making her itchy and we all know how annoying an itch can be!!!! I'll keep you updated Tracey
September 19, 200519 yr sometimes when a budgie moults the budgie will rub its face against the cage bars. the little area arund the outside of the eye looks bare and you can see the skin while the new feathers are coming through. it might just be normal? this happened to my budgie at one point. but its always best to check with the vets to make sure it doesnt get infected or anything, so your doing the right thing

Today she is looking fine - its hard to tell which eye was sore yesterday! :parrot: She hasn't been rubbing it at all the past 24 hours and it is no longer red. I cancelled the vet because I thought it would be more traumatic to take her than to keep an eye on her the rest of the week and if it flares up again to go straight away. Thanks for your help Tracey
September 20, 200519 yr budgies skin is naturally much redder than human skin because it is thin. sometimes it looks much worse than it actually is. if it is just a bare patch of skin its probably not sore just itchy as the pin feathers come through. i thinkwhen they rub their face against the bars the feathers stick up the wrong way sometimes too.
September 24, 200519 yr Is she even better today? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hi thanks for asking She is doing really well, she was just worrying us over nothing! She is actually an unusually happy budgie because I have been at home all week so she has had a lot of company. Tracey
