Posted September 17, 200519 yr Hi,can anyone give me some advice for Eric my four year old budgie. He is a bit fluffed up and off his food although he is eating a bit of millet. Don't want to rush him to the vet as they get very stressed during the journey. Can anyone give me any tips on foods to temp him to eat properly again. I don't think he's critical yet but just under the weather. He is with another bird in a warm room and is still cleaning himself and chirping a bit. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks Lisa
September 17, 200519 yr the first signs ofillness in budgies is usually looking fluffed up and slightly abnormal or loose droppings - by the time your budgie isnt eating very much he needs vet attention very very soon :hap: budgies can become hypoglycemic within 24 - 48 hours if they dont eat anything, so keep trying. keep a 40watt bulb near the cage to keep him warm and clips lots of his favourite treats around the cage - millet or his favorite veggie or both. if the other budgie hasnt yet shown any sings of illness it would be a very good idea to separate them and keep them in separate rooms until your poorly budgie is better. take him to an avian vet as soon as you can, i hope he improves soon.
September 17, 200519 yr This bird MUST be seen by a vet as soon as possible. By showing signs that he is unwell, he'a telling you that he has been ill for some time already. Put him in a smakk cage or travel box, cover it to make him more secure, and rush him to the vet. When youre there, dont forget to tell the vet that your budgie has been sharing airspace with another bird, or better still, take BOTH birds in.
September 18, 200519 yr Please take him to a vet as soon as possible as budgies do not show they are sick until they are really sick. They go down hill really quickly if not attended to.
September 18, 200519 yr I agree- once a bird actually starts to show sign of illness, then its time for you to take serious action. Birds in the wild hide signs of illness to protect themselves from predators. By the time a bird is showing that they may be sick, it has been been ill for a long time, and if you dont get it to a vet fast, you may be too late.
