January 10, 200520 yr Beautiful adam! Two things I noticed... in your last picture, the bird on the far right up top sorta looks like my Blueberry. Secondly, the violet budgie looks cobalt - how do you tell the difference?

March 5, 200520 yr Adam, those photos were great, and ive never seen such young Budgies before in the nest box.Is it really true the smaller birds live longer, my little Bobbie was 12 or 13 when we lost him, i always thought he was a bit of a squirt! He sounds much like your Beedie, i do miss him. Graham Green is coming along well, hes getting pretty tame now, and hes starting to get up to Budgie Mischief...like they do!! Those birds must keep you busy, and you have so many pretty mixed colours. Our neighbours have a small avairy, and they hope one of the pairs they have will breed, so maybe ill see some babies close up! thanks for sharing Donna
March 5, 200520 yr Hi! I loved the pictures. I have 2 questions. Was Beedy's leg and foot blue?? It looked that way in the picture. Also in the last picture, on the very top, far left, the blueish budgie with a yellow head, and blue cheek spots, what kind is he??? He is almost a perfect match to my Gemini!

March 21, 200520 yr Thats amazing! I love the aviary. It would cool to have one, but it is too cold where I live. Im curious, with 200 hundred budgies, can you tell them all apart and do they have names? Do they freak out when you enter the aviary, or approach them?
March 21, 200520 yr Author When your a club breeder like me, you dont waste time naming birds. Only my house pets are named They all know me so they are not all that freaked out. Just remember that they are untame, so they still fly away if you try to approach them. I know which is which and I also know other info by my records which is coded to the bird's ring number.

I breed more for fun so all my 18 budgies have names. My friends are amazed i can remember them all! Also, you're aviary is gigantic!!!! I wish i had a massive garage sized aviary!!! Mine is big enough for me and a friend to stand in when we clean it but it's nothing compared to yours!!! I also wish i could have a proper breeding room!!! You have a fantastic set up!!!

And one other violet paired with a large grey normal resulted in one yellow and one grey! So it?s back to the drawing board Will violet to violet give me what I want Anyway I wish I had an aviary as big as yours just makes me green with envy

If you want to breed visual violets that is a cobalt blue with the violet factor added, Giving you a true violet coloured bird,At least one of the birds should have the violet factor present. If for instance you mate a violet sky blue and a normal sky blue the resulting young will be all sky blue but 50% will be violet sky blue. If both parents were violet sky blue then all the young would be violet sky blues like there parents. When you mate a visual violet(remember this is a cobalt bird with the violet factor added) to a normal green unless the green bird is already split for blue all the young will be visibley green in colour because the green colour is dominant over the blue. The good news is that all the young are now split for blue because of the blue parent and some will have inheritad the violet factor as well. If you look very carefully at the young on the rump area any that have inherited the violet will be darker than those that havn,t. Now if you pair one of these to a visual violet you will get 100% violet babies The darker the birds the better. Just hope i havn,t blown youre brain. GILL. :bluebudgie:

Violet cobalt crossed to violet cobalt will give you, Violet sky blue 25% Violet mauve 25% Violet cobalt 50% Violet sky blue crossed to violet mauve will give you 100% visual violets. I have three blue pieds that the color on the rump area is different than the color on the rest of the body - it is darker. Two are somewhat two-toned in color on the backside (one is pretty obvious), the color across the mantle is different than the color on the rump. The third just has a purplish tint to the feathers on the back of the head and around the bend in the wing. Only two of them are cobalts, the other is probably skyblue. Does this mean they have the violet factor? Neither parent could ever be construed as a violet by any stretch of the imagination, probably not even cobalt. Any ideas?
March 23, 200520 yr Hi there, What you must remember is that the violet factor is a dominant one, So if a bird is carrying violet then it must show in its feathers. The only true violet to the eye is the violet cobalt. The problem is identifiying it in other colours,If you have a violet light green and stand it next to a normal light green you would see the violet hue over the feathers of the violet bird much clearer, But on its own you may not notice. A violet sky blue can look very much like a bright cobalt but the tail feathers are a good indication of wheather or not it is. With a violet sky blue they will be lighter than a normal cobalt and a visual violets tail feathers will be darker than a normal cobalts. What colour were the parents of these birds? GILL.

Yes, I did when I started. Funny story. When I first started out, I bought 5 budgies from a local backyard breeder (breeds for fun) , and got a large box and put some wire mesh over the hole that I cut out in the front of the box. Next day wanted more budgies as I really enjoyed them, 5 more, then 10 more, then finally my order for my small aviary came and I transferred to there, than I set up a breeding centre, ordered a larger aviary and it just escalated from there! It took long time to get my setup going. I?m thinking of doing this - Our president of our club, Ian has a fantastic setup where he lives. I might go over and take some photos of how he has got his system setup for you guys to see today. (if he is home) I?m sure you will find that very interesting.
