how to teach your budgie to talk

Featured Replies

I have had three budgies who have learned the art of talking. This is what i have done with all three.

take a young male budgie around 6 weeks old

name the bird (an easy shortage name) and say his name to it from day one

finger tame the bird INSIDE its cage saying its name gently over and over again

Once the bird is out the cage keep saying his name all the time especially when he is on the finger.

Saying his name slowly is better as budgies speak super quick so if you teach him his name slowly he will spaek it back normally.

Once budgie becomes happy sitting on your finger get as close as he will allow (i find lips to beak best).

Say his name over and over again this way the vibrations off your mouth sooths and almost hypnotises the bird (in my experience anyway). Gooby loves it

You have to do at LEAST two ten minute intensive sessions like this a day.

Beak to lips repeating the same word over and over again. Try to avoid any background noise. Use a high pitched voice (like you are talking to a baby).

once budgie has picked up one word he will pick up another and another and another.

Its fun fun fun

i love Goobys school time :D best time of the day

please can someone edit the title from form to from - cheers :)

great tips budge! i tried with casper in the beginning but it all went slowly downhill (Laughing out loud)! maybe i can try with the newbie eventually *wink wink* :D

Thanks Budge I'll do that now. Great advice i'll let you know if it works.

Thanks again. I hope my little bobby does start talking. My mum is always saying his name to him 2 try and get him to say that so thats a good idea.

My thoughts exactly

Great tips Rach!! ....now, if only i weren't so lazy.

I think you're right about the beak to lips thing. It does seem to grab their attention.

Good tips there budge.. :D

good tips there budge, i just read them out to Meg ready for his teacher time with Harry :D not sure if he will dare the lip to beak though (Laughing out loud)

let them peck you a few times and don't react - then there is no fun in it for them.

What Gooby does now is listen intently to me and if i stop he gently nibbles at my lips to get me to talk again - i really love it :D

(Laughing out loud), when Meg first put his hand in Harrys cage and he bit him (harry that is not meg) and meg squealed like a girl and pulled away i told him off i said dont react because that is what hes wanting if he thinks you will react he will be the alpha male blah blah blah, to which meg replied (still in a morngy girly way........'but it hurts' once again my poor hubbys pain gave me reason for hysterical laughter (Laughing out loud)

Great tips budge, has Gooby learnt to say Goobylicious yet? :)

not yet!

*sigh*

but when he does do you promise to get a recording of it. :)

i have been trying

Budgeover,

It appears that you've read various chapters of my book and if so I'm glad you found some of the techniques useful and successful.

really? what book is that?

i am purely self taught.

After various attempts at lips to beak teaching I have given up. Everytime I attempt it Boris thinks it's feed Karen time

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he picks anything up from all the baby talk yammering I've been doing at him for the past weeks.

He responds very well when I say Boris a Pretty Boy or Good Boy. He loves praise.

He responds best when I say Scratch? He knows that word & his head immediately cocks on the side. :(

I am referring to the book you asked for a free copy of on August 16 under the topic heading I introduced earlier on titled "Positive things to do in Taming your Budgie"

Interestingly enough, the wording in my website in the chapter "Teaching your Bird to Talk" refers to the "bird sitting calmly on your finger right up to your face" and the budgie "virtually feels the vibrations in your voice".

A picture of this is also included in this chapter.

By the way, the vital ingredient to the type of exceptional talking I describe is that one must first have a fully bonded tame bird for this technique to be successful and that is what my book is all about.

It shows the reader how to get to this point.

Tame also means that the bird of its own free will flies to and wants to be with that person - that is the real test of the strength of the bonding.

oh i say! :) thats funny but i can assure you that i have never read anything like that! Its just by experience that i put my lips to beak and so on! I just like the smell and feel of budgie :oliveb: How do i get a copy of your book? I do remember no you remind me asking for a free copy (Laughing out loud)

Hi there, I loved the advice as I am trying to teach my Billie Boy to talk. I have one problem though. I have had him for about 6 weeks now and he IS finger tame just not really INSIDE the cage. I wont allow him out the cage unless on my hand but he jumps onto my finger runs down my arm and off out. He then flys round the room a bit and when he is a little tired I can then retrieve him and get him to stay on my finger for ages and then put him back in his cage. He comes out about 3 times a day like this but if I try to stop him coming out of the cage he goes beserk and trys everything to get past my hand and I cannot seem to stop him squeezing out the door....

He will sit on my finger out the cage infront of my mouth and listen to me... I guess we are still in the taming process but he lets me stroke him. He was an avairy bird and probably about 12 or just over when I got him as his cere had already turned.

It does seem to make sense to do it like budge is saying because when my three are chuntering to each other it is very often beak to beak, or beak to mineral block ,or beak to cage bar,I never thought of doing it like that before.

FWIW even not so young budgies can start learning. Beekle is now at least two years old and although he had a few early attempts at mimicry he gave up until a few months ago.

He's not making good progress. My parents stopped over last night on their way on holiday and both commented about him saying his name and good morning.

Perhaps a budgie just shows his intentions before the age of two and if he shows an inclination he could take it further later in life.
