What type of seed?

Featured Replies

hi...i'm new to this budgie caper....a week ago i had 2 budgies, and i now have ten...no, not fast breeding...i've been buying!!!!

anyway, i went to buy more seed yesterday, and thought i'd like to start buying in bulk and mixing it myself so i could have more influence over what they eat...the shop i visited had a vast array of seed with many different types sold separately...their straight budgie mix looked dead boring (all the same colour with seemingly only two types of seed...long thin ones (oats?) and small round ones (millet?))

i've read the posts under the topic "Seed?" on this forum....and so i know about grit and egg mix......but i was wondering if anyone can suggest what types of seed i should mix to ensure my darlings get everything they need, and enjoy it...

thanks!!

jen

I am going to copy from a book i have the mix reccomended for budgies, i don't mix my own seed so don't hold me to this.

30% canary grass

15% white millet

20% yellow millet

15% red millet

10% broken oats

1% each of red rape, linseed, niger seed, safflower

2% each of teasel, aniseed

Like i said, this is just out of a book i have called "The Cage and Aviary Bird Handbook", i haven't used this before because i just buy Trill seed.
